Yes, check the membranes for any holes, cracks, etc. You can also buy a spare parts set that replaces the whole assembly on the freestyle (available at Target and other places). I have also occasionally gotten it assembled incorrectly, so make sure there is not a fold or that the outer ''shell''is attached properly...makes a different sound.

I had been having that problem and changed breast shields...made a huge difference. Not sure why, but think the ducts were getting fuller near the nipple and that would not allow the rest of the milk to release. Still knot some, but not like before.
