Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very portable. Doesn’t pump well I really like not having to plug the device into an outlet, but the pump itself has various issues. No matter how long the pumping session I am not empty. The parts have to be snapped in and out to work, but have had to replace part 3 different times. Again, it’s convenient, but if I could do it over o would have rather gone with a different plug in pump.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from works half time when they work, they are great...not i do not recommend this product. often times they do not seal so don't get proper suction. when pumping you have to unsnap/resnap them to get them to work. Only had pump for a month and they have been like that from the beginning.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Medela freestyle membranes and tubing. I have no complain about the membranes, they work just fine. However the tubing is a different story. When pumping just one side at a time there is no proper seal at the junction and you can hear air entering so you get reduced suction defeating the whole point of getting new tubing along with new membranes. I am wondering if I can exchange it? I’ll trycontacting costumer service.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Necessity Bought this, because I had suction issues with my pump and thought maybe I needed to replace the membranes. The new parts seemed to fix the suction issues for now, however after three uses, one of the parts already has a crack in it, so I have to use my old parts with the new membranes that came in this kit. I wish you could just buy new membranes instead of spending $30 for the whole new thing when most of the times it is the membrane alone that needs to be replaced. I wouldn't buy this product unless I had to.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inconsistent Suction I thought I was the only one encountering this problem but after reading these reviews I see I’m not. I too have to scramble with the parts to get correct suction. I have two sets and for some reason one day the parts will suction fine then the next day there is an issue. I researched online and couldn’t find any resolution to the problem. I thought maybe the parts needed to be fully dried but that did not solve the problem. I really get worried each time I take this pump to work because I never know if it’s going to work properly or not. For as much as this pump costs there should be no problems like this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inconsistent Suction Like a previous reviewer, I too am having problems with inconsistent suction. Generally it is on one side (I am double pumping). Many times I am having to pull apart my parts and reassemble, switching out parts, to try to achieve proper suction. It’s a little frustrating, especially when already struggling to keep up with baby’s milk intake!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not cost effective Only gave 2 stars based on the sheer fact that Medela does not make just the membranes available for purchase. I have to buy a new pair every 2-3 weeks (pumping 2x per day) because they lose their suction, taking me longer and longer to pump to get the same amount of milk, and sometimes not being able to feel that I’ve emptied each breast. I had the PISA with my first pregnancy, and those membranes and much smaller/cheaper and not costly to replace so frequently. Otherwise, I am very happy with the Freestyle pump. I have some freedom to move around, it’s easier to pump & drive with, and it’s gentler on my nipples. It’s a crying shame that Medela CHOOSES to not make just the membranes available for such a great pump. The cost & inconvenience has me considering to stop breastfeeding & switching to formula!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pump Parts The pump came highly recommended, but I feel as though I am constantly purchasing replacement parts because loss of suction. I pump two to three times a day (if I am away from baby) and I have purchased replacement parts at least 5 times since January 2018.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great at first, then frustrating suction issues FTM exclusively breastfeeding. No supply issues. I have the Freestyle. At first pump was great. Now I'm experiencing same concerns as other reviewers. Whistling sound like air is getting through the clear back caps for the shield connector. Today's pump was horrible, almost no suction action. I pump while feeding the other breast to get the let downs so I rely heavily on the pump working as it should as I have a baby in my hands and not much ability to be messing around with faulty parts. Something is definitely off / not reliably functional with the membrane, back cap, and shield connector pieces. Now I feel forced to purchase replacements for these parts. Like another reviewer said, I will likely have to go batty trying to figure out which individual pieces are ok and match those with others to create a functional membrane/cap/connector set to pump. I have looked for cracks, tears, and holes. I personally think it's a warning issue of some kind. Subtle to the eye but a significant (negative) problem in action.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Requires constant troubleshooting I've been using the Freestyle at least once a day and on business travel for over 7 months now and it has been a constant battle. I like the portability, that the parts are fairly easy to clean, and that the battery life is excellent. But I have 4 part kits and it's a complete crapshoot with any of the parts whether I will get good suction at any time. Sometimes fiddling with them while pumping helps, sometimes it doesn't. Replacing the parts hasn't helped, they perform on and off from day 1.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent poor suction This is my second time ( 2nd child) to use the medela freestyle pump with. Between my kiddos I decided to get new spare parts. I’m so bummed these are made differently than they were say 3 years ago. There is totally a difference in the way these are made. I don’t know if they are using a different factory or manufacturer or changed up the design but these do not work well at life. The life span of these things is 2-3 months. Super dissatisfied

Rated 2 out of 5 by from When they work, it’s great, but..... ...after two and a half months of use, they stopped being effective and I am getting less than an ounce combined where I usually get 3 when I pump. Having to buy such an expensive replacement part every couple of months is not what I expected when I bought a $500 pump. Why aren’t the yellow rubber pieces available separately?? If I had known all of this, I wouldn’t have purchased this pump.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Freestyle This pump is nice for travel and to wear while still being able to work around the house. However the parts are terrible. You constantly have to pop them in and out to try and get it to work. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but most of the time one will end up working and one won’t, so you end up pumping one side at a time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I don’t recommend I’ve only been using my pump for a month and the suction is not strong anymore and doesn’t empty milk
Date published: 2018-05-25
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not work for long I ordered spare parts because the originals that came with my freestyle did not work as well anymore. (I've only had my freestyle for 2 months). After receiving these they worked great but it was such a disappointment when one side would not pump as well. I really wanted these spare parts to fix my problem with my freestyle.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Membranes easily damaged My baby is 6 weeks old and I have been pumping once a day since birth to address supply issues. I previously used the pump in style for my first two children and when I was offered the freestyle from my insurance I thought I would give it a try. Instead I have had difficulty with the membranes constantly like other reviewers report. I have difficulty getting them to fit with the connector back piece and yesterday one of the membranes became deformed while using the steam cleaning bags correctly. Now the membrane doesn’t fit at all because it is somehow stretched out.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent Like previous reviewers, I find the suction has been inconsistent. It is very stressful not to be able to express milk properly as I am headed back to work from my leave and just suffered from mastitis. I initially had issues with the parts that came with my pump and found that sometimes taking it apart and putting it back together sometimes would help. Others, I still did not feel empty and needed to hand express after a pump session. I purchased 2 new sets of parts and noticed an immediate difference in output. Again, the parts have been mixed up and I can’t tell which parts are the new ones or old ones and when I will not be able to maximize output. I’m very disappointed at the inconsistency and the hassle of having to waste time taking the parts apart and putting them back together during the limited time I have to pump.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Frustration with replacement parts- FreeStyle After a couple weeks of getting inconsistent amounts from pumping I thought maybe I the parts had gone bad. I ordered a replacement set and they were working great for a week. I use this pump at work and today the suction was horrible. I had to single pump each breast and even then it was not as efficient as it had been or should be. Not sure what else to do to get this pump working correctly. I tried washing and thouroughly drying each piece with no difference. Very frustrated customer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Try a different pump.: I am buying my fourth set of these and my baby is only 4 months old. The suction is incredibly inconsistent. It seems like the parts wear out quickly. I clean them with the quick clean steam bags by medela so I don’t know what’s going on. I am taking each apart and putting it back together constantly. I end up frustrated and annoyed. I bought the freestyle because it is convenient with a rechargeable battery and ability to take with you everywhere. However, for my second baby, I am definitely trying something different.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wrong fit I ordered new parts after two months of use and these parts also do not fit together right. This compromises the suction ability of the pump.
Date published: 2017-11-06
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor suction I exclusively pump using a freestyle that I love and used with my first baby and now using with my second one. Sadly I have to buy new spare parts often because at some point the suction gets really weak in one or both of the spare kit (mebrane or caps not sure where the problem come from) after a month of use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from great pump poor parts I'm a medela user form Indonesia. My 2nd daughter is 5mo. I'm struggling to breast feed my 2nd child so I dont mind to changed my breastpump to get the best result, after 4mo rent my friends freestle, I decided to replace the new one, but very disatisfied that 2 connector that i bought ffrom rela medela distributor didnt work well like my friend's connector. after that i decided to bought medela freestyle for my own, n disatisfied again that connector who came with the bundle new medela freestyle also didnt work well, the suction id very diffferent rather than the old medela freestyl that my friend bought 3 years ago. i have contacted medela customer service in Indonesia, they have replace the connectors with the new one, but it seems that the connectors still didn't work well. So now I pump with my pump but using my friend's connector. after reading a lot of bad review about the parts, does medela taking care of this issue to repair the quality of the parts? bcoz I'm from Indonesia, but I feel the same issue like the other moms in this page..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weak Bought this before Baby arrived. Got to use it soon after. The suction is awful. I found myself trying to fix the valves while I was “trying” to pump. Very stressful. I finally gave up. And now my Medela hospital grade breast pump is my backup pump....
Date published: 2018-09-29
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Reduced milk supply I started exclusively pumping when my baby was 2 weeks old because he seemed to eat better that way. This pump has decreased my supply drastically because of the poor suction. Now I have to supplement because I'm only producing about half as much as my baby needs. Just like other reviewers I have to readjust the parts several times before getting proper suction. Sometimes on side will suck great and the other not at all. Sometimes suctions stops halfway through. I decided to breast feed for the health benefit and to save money. I have not ended up saving money because I am having to use formula because the pump is not as efficient as I would have hoped. I have also had to replace parts and baby is only 2 months old.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst pump ever I regret ever buying this pump. Suction is horrible and hardly ever works

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Same problems as others with suction Thank goodness I didn’t have to pay full price for this pump and my insirance covered part. What a disappointment with the suction. Did a lot of reading and research online and here. Also have to take parts apart while oumping to try to get suction ti eork better. Bought spare parts thinking it would help. It hasn’t. Not to mention each time I have to buy the entire piece and can’t just buy the membrane. Also found out parts can be different the main plastic part the flanges fit into can have two or three holes in the bottom which affects siction - mine only has two and apparently causes less suction. Medela seems to not care, as the reviews date back 6 months and in that time they have done nothing to correct the problems people are having with parts and suction(which are often the same). Hoping they actually do something. I went out and got a hygeia pump. Has its own issues but way better suction in shorter time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inconsistent I thought I was the only one struggling! No exaggeration, I have 6 different sets and my baby isn’t even 6 months old. I’m constantly replacing and still having issues with inconsistent suction and performance. I love the mobility of the Freestyle, but this is crazy for the price!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I have bought several of these replacements and I was thinking it was just me having issues but apparently it’s not. It’s really difficult pumping without proper suction....
Date published: 2018-01-25
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible replacement I bought these part as a back up for the ones that I use on a daily basis. The suction That they provide is much less than my regular part. After personally investigating different reasons it’s because the connection at the back of the part housing does not connect to the tubes with up an appropriate sea that they provide is much less then my regular pump parts. After investigating it I realized it’s because the new parts do not connect with the tubing and create a poor seal. This affects my ability to properly Express my milk and leaves me feeling very uncomfortable and decreasing my milk supply. I had hoped that purchasing from a dealer directly would reduce this risk of a poor Purchase but no joy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from inconsistent suction I have been using freestyle since my twins were born in october. As they were preemies and had to stay at the hospital for weeks after birth I was using hospital pump at the beginning and had great outcomes. I have purchased the freestyle as it was a smaller pump with great reviews. as you can imagine with twins my hands are always full. I have to say I had nothing than problems since the beginning, one time it works great the other I have to adjust the parts 3-4 times in order to get a proper suction. I do not even know how many spare parts I ve purchased so far...but it is a lot... I ve been buying new ones hoping that it will solve the suction issue but so far I had no luck. I thought that is just the way that all the pumps are period. But my friends assured me that it is not the case nad pump should work just as good as the hospital one and for sure the suction power should be consistent. My twins are 4 months old now and I still pump 8 times a day as they wont breastfeed and I am on the verge of giving up due to frustration with the device and all that extra time it takes to fix and reajust all the parts over and over again.

Since u mention the membranes cannot be uv sterilize, how about the other parts? Breastshield bodies, flange, backcaps. Can I sterilize these?

Asked by: Michk
Hi Michk--- All of our Medela breast pump parts should only be sanitized by boiling or by using of our Quick Clean Micro-steam Bags. We do not recommend any other methods be used since we have not tested them for that purpose. We hope that information helps. Have a great day!

I bought a Freestyle 4 years ago, now the second baby is coming and I am wondering which parts I have to replace?

Asked by: Marie.K
When I had my second I replaced the breast shield connectors, membranes, and tubes! The spare parts kit and the extra tubing should be all that you need.

I’m using uvsteralizing machine. The membranes are okay to go in? What’s membrane made of? Is it natural rubber?

Asked by: Ededed
We do not recommend that the membranes be placed in the UV Sterilizing Machine since we have not tested them using that method. They have only tested them by boiling and using our Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags. These would be the only two methods of sanitizing that we would recommend. Medela components and products are not manufactured with natural rubber or natural rubber latex. Please feel free to reach out to us, if you have any additional questions. We're now also available to assist you via chat on our website!
