  • 8 yr old Breastpump provided by WIC

I am expecting and getting my 8 yr old pump out and ready to be used. I received it from the Arkansas WIC program for free when I had my daughter and I'm not sure if I should be using it since it's 8 yrs old. I'm also not sure what model it is since it was handed out by WIC instead of being bought in a store. Also, if I can use it, what do I need to do to update it so it fits today's standards of pumping and feeding. Also, the cups or pieces that fit over the breast/nipples use to hurt so bad and make my nipples sore. Are there better parts for this out there that are more comfortable and don't make your nipples as sore as they did 8 years ago? Please advise. Thanks! Belle

It should say somewhere on the pump as to what pump it is. Look on the underside even. Most of them even have serial numbers. If you can't find any info, try calling Medela and a rep will help you, I am sure. That said, if the flanges (cups) were hurting you, it's most likely because they were too small or big for your areolas/nipples. Quite normal. You may have to order a size up or down (you can order the flanges on this site, I believe or at least see them, and again you can ask a Medela rep - I know Babies R Us carries some as well usually). In general, an 8 year old pump should be okay to use as long as it works correctly. If you feel you aren't getting the output you would with a better pump, then I'd either rent a hospital grade (Symphony) or purchase a new Pump in Style. :)
