I was wondering what I can use that is safe to remove some black mildew that is on my breast shields (I have the freestyle if it matters). Do you think i can use a diluted solution of bleach like the amount you use for cleaning baby toys?? Will boiling them remove it? Will the rubber pieces warp if iIboil them? I have used soap and water and the stains remain.

I would not take any chances with that. I would for sure get new ones. It is worth the money for your babies health.....

Good idea, I didn't realize how easy or inexpensive it is to just replace the pieces that are mildewed, $14.99 at Target for the Medela spare parts (for the Freestyle connectors the shields are still fine) , worth it! Thanks

I too am having mildew on allof my medela freestyle shields no matter how well I wash them. This is the third child that I have nursed and never had this issue with previous pumps (both medela's), however, I noticed that the freestyle shields/parts have a different (new?) material that I haven't seen on other medela shields. The mildew is only on the beige/yellow pieces of the shield which makes me think that it is an issue with the material being a good medium for mildew growth. I'm going to ask the medela company about it, because I think that even if I buy more parts they will eventually just get mold on them too. Hope this helps....

i have the freestyle and i've been using it non stop @ least 4 times a day for the past 4 mths and i haven't had that mildew problem, after i clean all my parts with hot soapy water i sterilize them and let all the parts air dry, im sure if u put the connector back together before it dries up might cause mildew. HTH

I am noticing the same thing in my connectors and have not had this problem with previous equipment (4 years ago). I also take them completely apart, but it still gets a little water stuck in there. Very frustrating.
