  • mold in tubing

I have recently discovered mold in my breast tubing. Most likely it developed from the water in the tubes that didn't dry. 2 questions. 1.Is there a risk of the mold from the tubing getting into the breastmilk? Should I discard the milk? and 2. I steamed the tubings in the microwave twice with the medula tubes. Do you think that killed the mold? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! -frustrated mom

Kate, The tubing of your breast pump kit is not supposed to be washed, so it shouldn't be getting wet. I'd recommend that you purchase replacement tubes and not wash them any more. Wash the rest of your pump kit in hot soapy water, rinse well and let air dry.

If you get your current tubing cleaned or purchase new tubing, the best way to avoid any moisture in the tubes is to keep the pump running, even after you have taken the shields off. This will allow air to flow through the tubes and dry upresidual moisture. Usually it only takes a few minutes but if done whenever you see moisture, you will prevent mold from growing.

While it is not our standard protocol to participate in our discussion board posting, we would like to be sure you have the proper instructions for tubing care. Condensation is a natural result of humidity in the air or not drying tubing after washing, and can occur with any manufacturer’s pump kit. Condensation can be prevented simply by keeping your tubing clean and dry. After pumping, remove tubing from breastshields and allow pump to run for 1-2 minutes until tubing is completely dry. Tubing Care – Inspect tubing after each pumping session for condensation and/or milk. If milk appears in tubing – 1. Turn off the pump and unplug from power source. 2. Remove and disassemble the tubing, pump connector, piston, cylinder, membranes and membrane capes (parts vary by pump used). Wash in soapy water, then rinse in clear cold water. 3. Shake water droplets out of tubing and hang to air-dry. For faster drying, attach tubing to pump and run pump 1-2 minutes or until dry, or pour a small amount of isopropyl alcohol through the tubing to dry.
