I have been breasfeeding my son for two months and have been doing fine. This weekend, I took the kids on an outing to Chuckie Cheese, and so I had a delay in breast feeding my 2 month old. By the time I got home I was completely engourged. I tried warm and cold compresses but my right breast feels like it it very hard and completely clogged. It is extremely painfull. I have been pumping all night to try and get it unclogged with no sucess. Has anyone had a similar experience with feeling clogged up and not able to get milk out?

Yes, have you tried massaging your breast in a warm shower? That is about the only way I know of other than the compresses. If you have been knotted up that long though, you should call you dr. You MIGHT (and I mean MIGHT) have mastitis. Is it hot and painful? I have better luck with my son nursing to unclog my ducts than with pumping. You might try a bigger shield too to help in pumping. That also seemed to help with my knotting problem. Feel for you! Hope you are able to remedy it soon!

I just recently had mastitis. I took a warm bath and massaged my breast. I kept pumping and feeding and eventually it wore itself out. I would still suggest talking with a Dr.

I just had this problem about 48hours ago. I did EVERYTHING suggested to help with the engorgement, but nothing worked. I pumped, I had him nurse until he got frustrated there was not enough milk coming out, I hand expressed, I massaged, I took a warm shower, I put on a hot compress for a minute before he nursed, I put on a cold compress afterwards, I took motrin to help with the pain. Then I realized I could see the milk trying to get out, but this white skin was blocking it. I did what I thought was a good idea at the time and just cut open the skin on my nipple with my nails, Now 48hours later he spit up blood. I created a scab and my breast is sore from where I tore the skin, but the engorgement is gone. Now I have been told to put olive oil on the nipple to mostien it and neosporin to keep it from getting infected. I would try to have an LC visit or go to see one at the hospital to see if they can release your milk before you get mastitis.

I had the same problem and lactation consultant told me to get a clean disposable diaper and put some water in it and microwave it to get it warm enough ( i put mine in the microwave for 20 seconds). I then applied it to the affected area of the breast and massaged it a bit before I pumped. I then pumed immediately after. As I pumped, I massaged my breast from the outside of the breast toward the nipple. It might take a couple of times but it worked for me. Also, I have noticed that this has happend once before when I use an underwire bra. Maybe it was coincidence.
