I have a 2 year old that I was unable to breastfeed due to a medical condition, Lupus. She was born at 32 weeks and my milk didnt come in and the medications the doctor put me on were unsafe for the baby. It broke my heart that I would not be able to breastfeed. On February 26th I gave birth to my 2nd daughter. Again she was born early but when I came time for the doctor to tell me that I had to go on the meds I begged him to let me stay off them so I could breastfeed. However I am having a hard time getting her to latch on and getting my milk to come in. I have been starting each feeding with breastmilk but she is always hungry afterwards and wants to finish with formula. I dont know how to get my milk to come in at a greater amount. When I spoke to the dr he said to continue doing what I was doing because the baby was gaining a great amount of weight and getting the nutrients that she needs from both the milk and formula. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to increase my milk production??? Thank you for your help....

Yes, relax.  I now it sounds simple but it dose help.

I had a similar experience, my first child didn't take to the breast and I tought there was somthing wrong with me.  The LC had me totally streesed out and I finally gave up.  So my secound child (now 10 wks old) was my last chance.  I went into it with the attitude that if it didn't work that was OK because my first turned just fine.

Have you tried to switch feed.  (Feed on one side for 5 minutes, switch to the other side and feed for five minutes, switch to the other side and vic versa until you empty.)

My son would eat for about an hour each feeding at first.  Maybe your supplies just hasen't come in yet.  How old is the baby?  Have you gone back to work?

Do you have a good pump?  You can pump for 15 mins after every feeding boost your supply.

What ever happens enjoy your baby and don't beat your self up too much if breast feeding dosen't work for you.  Your first child turned out OK, right.

I find that when I eat oatmeal once in the morning and once at night my milk production increases. I eat a quarter cup of the plain kind in a cup of milk with a little bit of sweetner. It would also help to pump in between feedings so you can "trick" your body into producing more.

The best way to increase your milk supply is to keep nursing.. don't give bottles. The first few months is crucial to this. This is when your baby is setting your supply by nursing so much. Babies nurse A LOT the first few weeks so to say that the baby is always hungry afterward... if the baby is still hungry... let the baby continue to nurse.. just keep switching sides and the baby will be getting what she needs. If she has 5 to 6 wet diapers a day... she's all good. Giving bottles now will only screw up your supply because the amount that your baby needs is not being told to your body if she is drinking a bottle. There are things to increase your supply such as Fenugreek, oatmeal, etc.. but the BEST way is to just keep nursing. You will see :)  Good luck!!!

Just pump the milk after she is done.. the more you pump and stimulate the breasts the more milk you will have

I agree with the previous poster that you should keep feeding to increase your milk supply. Breastfeeding is all about supply and demand. Feed your baby often, even if she only drinks a little bit. Your supply will increase. The other thing you can do is take fenugreek capsules:

They are natural and boost milk production. Good luck!

I went on the Micronor Mini pill by Ortho and it helps increace milk supply. Also Fenegreek seed is good to take it in capsule form cause the tea is not enough.

As long as your baby is gaining weight, relax!!! The 1st 7-10 days were really stressful for me. My son was constantly feeding the 1st 2-3 days, losing weight, not sleeping b/c he was still hungry, and he started getting crystals in his pee meaning he was dehydrated. So, started feeding him formula AFTER breastfeeding at each session to top him up. I know it delayed my milk coming in by a few days, but my milk eventually did come in and I stopped the formula top up. Good luck. Just keep breastfeeding as much as your baby demands. Supply will eventually kick in based on demand. It's an incredible system. Good luck!
