Here's info about 1 of the products that is highly recommended by our LC's at work. I combine this w/ Brewer's Yeast tablets.

Here's the ingredient list for the product I mentioned before I copied & pasted this from one of my other posts in the Medela Discussion Board. Here it is:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to worry! I thought I'd give you the ingredients listing for you to compare when you get your other (products) in. This list truly impressed me! It gives the common name AND the Latin, so I will list from left to right as the label lists it all.

Lactation Blend Dietary Supplement (Nursing Support)

Formulated for Women By Dr Tori Hudson

Fennel seed ~ Foeniculum vulgare   100 mg

Nettles leaf ~ Urtica dioica   70 mg

Blessed thistle ~ Cnicus benedictus   70 mg

Vervain ~ Verbena officinalis   70 mg

Borage seed oil (min 8% GLA)   35 mg

Borage flower & top ~ Borago officinalis   70 mg

Hops ~ Humulus lupulus   45 mg

Oat straw ~ Avena sativa   45 mg

Red Raspberry leaf ~ Rubus idaeus   40 mg

Goat's rue aerial parts ~ Galega officinalis   40 mg

Chaste tree berry ~ Vitex agnus-castus   35 mg

    Fenugreek seed ~ Trigonella foenum-graecum   25 mg

Milk thistle seed extract (80% silymarin) ~ Silybum marianum   20 mg

I can't remember what all I suggested, so I might repeat myself. Have a picture of your baby available while pumpimg. Pump in a comfortable location & BE comfortable while pumping. Maybe have something that smells like your baby with you when you pump. You can try warm towels on your breasts before you pump. Try manual expression first, before starting your pump. Drink 1-2 liters of non-caffeinated fluids per day. You can find Brewer's Yeast in tablet form; that is supposed to help, also (inserted note- I've already seen ~100 mL/day increase while piumping at work w/ this added in for the last 1/2 week!). I think I have exhausted my limited knowledge. OH, get your sleep & reduce your stress, including your stress over your ([another inserted note-] pumping schedule &) milk production. If you are COMPLETELY stressed out because you are pumping for 20 minutes every 2 hours & sleep deprived, it is probably much better toskip 1 or 2 sessions at night, than stress you & your body further, because stress affects your supply! Ok, I think that is IT! Phew! Let me know how this helps!

    --------------------------------------------------------------

That's all I had in the other thread. I added in 2 extra notes in the bottom paragraph that I thought could help/clarify. I hope I've helped you! :-D
    I hope I have helped! :-) -AMB

I recently returned to work and noticed a drop in my milk supply. I was prescribed Reglan (generic is Metoclopram), one 10 mg tablet every 6 hrs but I did not notice an increase so I tried the fenugreek and brewer's yeast. I didn't really notice a change with that, either. However, I just read an article that said for the results to be noticeable, you have to take THREE fenugreek capsules three times a day. I had only been taking 2, so I'm going to try it now with 3 and hopefully that will help!

I've heard about moms being prescribed Reglan but which doctor would I go to to ask about this? OB/GYN? or primary physician?

I asked my OBGYN immediately after birth because I'd spoken to my LC about it already.

Yes, Angie it does work! I was not producing milk and my son was not latching on properly but as soon as I bought it and took it, within 4-5 days in started to help me produce more milk with the assistance pumping. The ONLY side effect it had on me was that my hair started falling out REAL bad. I hope this helped you and I hope u take it. I bought it at a health food store. My friend and I gave birth 2 weeks apart and shes having the same problem she is also drinking a tea called Mothers milk-to also help the production of breast milk. Its also available at the health food store or at super Target.

You can purchase fenugreek capsules in vitamin shoppe, vitamin world, or GNC. Fenugreek helped me increase my milk supply I just have a problem remembering to take them. I went to a lactation consultant and she also suggested "Mother's Milk" capsule. It contains fenugreek, blessed thistle, and other herbs combined that helps increase milk production. From what I have heard some doctors even prescribe this to mom's with poor milk production. I think this is better compared to taking medications and hormones even if they are prescribed by doctors. Medications such as Reglan and others has serious side effects. I have done research on Fenugreek and only mom's who have premies and diabetic moms should NOT take it because it decreases blood sugar. I have not experienced any flatulence or upset stomach from taking fenugreek like some of the other moms but each one of us may have a different response to the same stuff. Best that we can do is to try the safest thing we can find, monitor our milk supply with it, and monitor baby (urine output, stools, fussiness of baby, activity of baby, etc.). I also checked if fenugreek affects the breastmilk composition and research says it does not. Practically your baby will still get the same amount of proteins, vitamins and other nutrients found in breastmilk of moms not taking it. I hope this helps.

I drank one cup of fenugreek tea (made from seeds I bought at the health food store) and saw a significant improvement in my supply. I never thought that the "mother's milk" teas worked for me, and I wasn't comfortable taking herb pills, so the tea was a nice compromise. The seeds from my health food store were just a few dollars for several months supply. I never noticed a maple syrup smell because I wasn't taking enough of it to cause that side effect. I also found pumping from one side while nursing the other is a good way to build up supply, though it can be tricky to do.
