I started trying to pump when I was in the hospital and when I got to my house I pumped, but not every 3 hours.  I got to where I would pump every 12 hours.....so now I really want to get a great supply so if I start pumping every 5-6 hours can I get a good supply?  When I pump now I get 1/2 an ounce or just under,  Baby boy is just over 6 weeks.  Thank you for any info and please keep us in your prayers.

The suggestion that I received from a lactation consultant was to pump after every feeding to increase supply.  This will really help if you are going back to work.  Good luck!

Yes you should pump after every feed to ensure a empty breast and for ten minuntes between feeds to bring new milk into the breast!!  I did that after the NBICU Nurse suggested it and now my 4 1/2 month old gets full from one breast, after pumping the other side, to check on my supply, I have gotten in sitting 18 oz..

    Good luck and god bless!!

Hello, my son is 14 weeks now, and i have been pumping exclusively since birth due to latch problems, and i have always struggling with a low supply.  I was wondering what is the proper way of pumping to ensure that my breast is completely empty?  And is it to late to keep trying to get my supply up?

    Hi,

My son is 4 1/2 months old, and he is feed from the breast mainly (well always), however I did have to use a pump duing his 9 day stay at the NBICU!!

I always angled the pump on my breast and turned it on to slow, medium, then high, and get as much as I could from the pump, and my hand would squeeze on the sides of my breast!

I would do a slow motion of the squeeze, and I could feel my breast go limp in a way, from the heavy fullness feeling before pumping, to light and almost normal! LOL!!

I also could tell by the color of the milk, at first was light, then in the middle darker, then light agian near the end! Always white!!

Good luck and I hope I have helped!!
