  • nipple blister from pumping

    09-21-2008 12:54 AM Reply

I've developed a blister on the side of one of my nipples. I have a premmie, so I only pump. What can/should I put on the blister so pumping isn't quite so painful.

If you can turn down the suction on your machine, that might help some.  You also might try putting lanolin on your nipples in between pumpings and perhaps wearing nipple shields to keep your clothes from rubbing on the sore spot.  It will still hurt, but not quite as bad, maybe.

Has someone assessed the flange size that you are using?  Please have a lactation consultant evaluate the flange size.  You may be using the wrong size and if you were fitted early on in the process, your size may have changed.

I had the same thing happen. My breast shield was the wrong size. I called Medela and they helped me figure out what size I needed. They also sent it to me since that size was hard to find.
