We recently were surveyed by Joint Commission.  The surveyor was very interested in what nutritional information and support we provide for our Breastfeeding mothers.  The belief on the part of the surveyor was that there should be special nutritional support and guidance given to every mother who breastfeeds. Do any of you have a dietician visit with each breastfeeding patient?  Are there any handouts available that give information on the special nutritional needs for the breastfeeding mother?  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sandy Mullin

I am a health care provider and recently had a baby.  I did not meet with a dietician, but the lactation consultant spent 3 or 4 minutes addressing maternal dietary recommendations during lactation.  She provided a brief handout with tips regarding prenatal vitamins, water consumption, protein needs.  I think meeting with a dietician might have been overwhelming during those early days and the lactation consultant did an adequate job in my opinion.

At our facility, a dietician sees all the mothers, but especially the breastfeeding clients. She gives them a handout about nutrition and breastfeeding. As an LC, I also speak alittle about nutrition.
