When the baby is born, the nurse will most likely encourage you to breastfeed immediately! Talk about crash-course! ;)
But apparently there is not much milk production right away. Your milk will come in fully over the next week (two days, in my case). You will NEVER need formula (unless you are a rare case). The baby does not need a lot of milk the first couple of days, so it's really just adjusting to breastfeeding for both of you. When your milk fully comes in (and you will KNOW IT!) you can pump if you like - however, keep in mind, the more you pump, the more you produce! If you're engorged (in the beginning) you may just want to wait until your baby wants his next feeding so that your body figures out how much milk it needs to satisfy your little one.
Later, when feeding rhythm is established, you can start pumping to start freezing and storing your milk. I didn't start pumping until my little one was nearly 2 months... then I just got prepared for returning to work, and storing milk.
