Hello! I am pregnant and will like to know if when the baby is born how soon can i pump milk? I want to pump the milk for the baby since i will be going back to work, but can the baby drink formula the first few days until the milk comes in ? or does it come in right away after giving birth? enough to pump? thanks for your help Lynn

When the baby is born, the nurse will most likely encourage you to breastfeed immediately! Talk about crash-course! ;) But apparently there is not much milk production right away. Your milk will come in fully over the next week (two days, in my case). You will NEVER need formula (unless you are a rare case). The baby does not need a lot of milk the first couple of days, so it's really just adjusting to breastfeeding for both of you. When your milk fully comes in (and you will KNOW IT!) you can pump if you like - however, keep in mind, the more you pump, the more you produce! If you're engorged (in the beginning) you may just want to wait until your baby wants his next feeding so that your body figures out how much milk it needs to satisfy your little one. Later, when feeding rhythm is established, you can start pumping to start freezing and storing your milk. I didn't start pumping until my little one was nearly 2 months... then I just got prepared for returning to work, and storing milk.

Hi if you want your milk to come in. You should put your baby to your breast as soon as he or she is born. I know you plan to go back to work. But your milk will come in better this way. I have 5yr old twins and when they were born I pumped right away so they would get that first good mommy milk they were two months early and were in the hospital for a month they never learned to breast feed I felt robed of that so I pumped for a little over a year so they still get what they needed now everyone thinks they are 6 or 7yrs old because they had that good start in life. I wish you all the best. I am a mother of 4 and am expecting no.5 hope I helped
