Calma®
Product Overview
Introducing Calma: Designed exclusively for breastmilk feeding.
Switching from bottle back to breast has never been easier. Calma was developed using evidence-based research on babies' natural feeding behavior so mothers and babies can enjoy their breastfeeding bond longer.
With Calma, the milk will only flow if the baby works and creates vacuum to remove the milk. This enables the feeding behavior learned at the breast to be used with Calma.

Calma® | Medela 3.4 out of 5 based on 24 votes.
I just loved the fact that the rhythm in which my son drank out of this bottle was exactly the same as when he is nursing. But when my 4 month old first tried the bottle, he had trouble controlling the flow. It took a couple of times for him to get the hang of it but when he got it he used the bottle very well. My biggest complaint is the fact that you are not supposed to use a bottle brush with the bottle and the nipple has so many different parts to clean. Overall the botle is good and works well for the occasional bottle feeding.

i need some positive feedback about the calma bottle as i plan on buying one in the next few days. there is too much negative feedback and its putting me off big time on this page. any positivity would be appreciated.

My son is 7-weeks-old and was exclusively breastfed for the first 6 weeks, until he caught a cold from my daughter that turned into a bad respiratory infection and caused him to be admitted to the hospital, because he would not eat and was dehydrated. They gave him saline and glucose via IV to rehydrate him and I pumped my milk until he was ready to eat again.
The doctor wanted me to feed him through a bottle, so we could gauge how much milk he was getting. Well, I didn't want to use the regular rubber nipples they give at the hospital, because I was afraid he'd get nipple confusion. So, the first bottle I tried was the First Years Breastflow bottle which advertises that it mimics actual breastfeeding, however, he HATED the nipple and rejected it.
Next, we tried the regular slow flow Medela nipple and he took it, but I didn't like it because it dripped even when he wasn't sucking and let out too much milk. So, I was surfing the Medela web site and saw the advertisement for the Calma Nipple. I went and purchased two, but only opened one, just in case he rejected it (so I could take the other back).
He loved this nipple. He caught on right away. See, I have really large nipples, so the length of the Calma is not a problem for him. I also like the fact that he has to work for his milk, just like the breast. And since this nipple is more firm than the breast, he has to suck a little bit harder to get the milk. This has actually helped to improve his regular breastfeeding latch. Now, he transitions back and forth from breast to bottle like a pro.
I love this nipple and would definitely recommend it to nursing moms!!!

Hen I first started using calms I noticed that yes the nipple was not at all an ideal feeling or looking nipple. My daughter at first spit it out, I then remembered that a nurse had told me in order for baby to get the suckling motion, you have to rub the nipple against the roof of the mouth. I did that and instantly she got the hang of it. I love it, she actually has to work to get her food. Unlike regular bottle she can just nibble on and milk comes spilling out. I love this bottle it was defiantly money well spent!

I was so excited about this product when I watched the video and read the specs because I ebf, but it was such a waste of money. I'm not sure if the specific one I received was defective (didn't see anything), but the flow was far too fast. My son hardly even sucked and he was drowned in milk. Also it did leak a bit when held upside down. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

As I am getting ready to go back to work, I needed to introduce the bottle to my daughter. As I read the reviews I do agree that the milk comes out a little fast, but my daughter has adjusted just well. I do like that I have been able to go from bottle to breast with no problem throughout the day. The only downside to the price.

I got these nipples thinking they would help avoid nipple confusion , they are 20 bucks for ONE nipple , and I got 2 in hopes she would take to it . Well she choked on it and fussed and fussed ... now I am out 40 bucks ! These are a waste of money . The nipple is too long ! Unless your nipples are super long do not buy these! My Daughter has latching issues , so we use a shield so she can take a decent amount in her mouth ,but these are too long. I guess I will just stick with the other ones or her Tommy Tippee ones that she likes .

I paid $21 for this bottle because supposedly the baby has to SUCK for the milk to come out but milk drips out of it if you turn it upside down. Not only that but I expected only a small amount to come out at a time. It's the equivalent to a fast flow nipple. My son chokes on all the milk coming out and it ends up running down his cheeks. HUGE waste of money. If it worked, it would be fantastic, but it does not.

The idea about this bottle is excellent, but that nipple is way too long! It has nothing to do with breast nipple. I really wanted my child to get back to breast, but only strangling with this bottle, making him "gag". I am disappointed!

I only bought one because I didn't know if it would work, and now I need more!!
For those saying it's too long, during the first minutes of feeding my baby would just suck the very tip of the Calma, but eventually he gets the whole nipple in his mouth.

I love this bottle. I first heard about it from a woman in my breast feeding support group and I have to say it was the best $20 I ever spent. My son doesn't prefer the bottle over the breast but he does not have a problem with switching back and forth. I was super hesitant on giving him a bottle but I introduced this bottle to him at 2 weeks old and he does great. I wish it was a little harder for him to get the milk out because he makes a bit of a mess when i feed him with the bottle but I just make sure to have a bib and soft towel in hand to clean up as he's a messy eater. I would definitely recommend this bottle to all breastfeeding and non breast feeding mothers. Great Product

For a nipple that is supposed to mimic breastfeeding, the flow is far too fast. I was expecting a dribble of milk to come out, not gushes that cause my daughter to choke. Price is also ridiculously high for basically just a nipple. Even if these did work, i would never spend the money to buy a bunch. $20 for a nipple is too much!

I bought this bottle when my daughter was 5 months old, in hopes that if I am unable to Breastfeed for any reason, at least she can be bottle fed. I have been trying for 3 months to get her used to it and she just seems interested in chewing on the nipple, and when she does get some milk to come out, she gets mad and refuses to put it in her mouth anymore. Great concept, but I guess my daughter is just a little picky.

My baby was admitted to hospital due to Jaundice (Day 4-6), and during that period of time, there was no choice but to put her on bottle. Was so afraid she will have nipple confusion and so we tried Calma (introduced to us at a Medela BF forum) ... When she came home, she was superb moving between breast and bottle. I believe her latching skills actually improved after using the bottle.

When I first used the nipple, I really liked it and so did my child. When she used it the first time she was 6 weeks old. She took to it very well. My husband used it later that evening and felt that she was choking a little bit due to the nipple being a bit to long. I used it a few more times after he did and realized that she ate better with the normal medela nipple rather than the calma and she did choke a little on the calma nipple. I still continue to try and use it, because I like that it is not a constant flow and is most similar to the breast. She has no problem going from breast to bottle. Ultimately we prefer the medela nipple over the calma but I am still open to her using the calma nipple.

Not only is the nipple too long but my daughter can't suck hard enough to get the milk out. It seems like it is also too firm for her to get her mouth around it well. She has only been breastfeed and has had no problems. We tried calma when I went back to work. I'm disappointed I spent so much money on something I now can't use.

I had the same issues as other reviewers: the nipple is too long and my son keeps choking on it, maybe he is ust too young (a week old). I have to supplement and was hoping this product would avoid the dreaded nipple confusion. It could work well otherwise...
|
I saw the ad and purchased the bottle with the hope that it would be easier for my baby to switch between breast and bottle, but I cannot make him accept the Calma nipple. We had one successful attempt, but most of the time he cries and is irritated. It seems to me that the nipple is too long and too hard to deform easily. I will give it a few more tries. I would appreciate any tips and tricks.

I'm over all happy with the product, was excited about getting it. it does not drown my baby with milk like the other bottles so it's nice that he can eat at his own pace without milk being everywhere. There is a lot of parts though to clean but you get used to putting it all together quickly. There is one thing I dont like about it, the lid is very tricky to put on sometimes, but that is a no big deal really, just glad by the fact that it works well for my son.

My baby is little over 5 weeks old and until now exclusivly BF. I was so affraid of her refusing to take a bottle and/or have nipple confusion. But we tried Calma and everything went super smooth! She did great. Just remember try this nipple before any other as recommended for best results. I am thrilled that Calma is finally in US!

My son (born Sept. 5 '12)was losing weight/not gaining for 3 weeks and fussy with reg. bottles after one week he has gained 3 ounces.
|
I've been trying lots of different bottles for my three month old who is exclusively brest fed. While the idea seems wonderful, she seemed to like this bottle the least. I believe mainly because the nipple is too long and she was choaking as a result. I will keep trying though and report if we have any success,

I look forward to try this one!! My son used the Breast Flow system, which worked, but the nipple kept collapsing on him. I've been patiently waiting for someone to come out with a new design that works. I'm blessed right now that my daughter, being diagnosed with a heart condition so bottle feeding has been a must to ensure she doesn't burn to many calories while feeding, easily switches from the current Medela nipples to breast. I'm so excited to try I look forward to having a our next bundle. Gotta wait a bit cause she's only 2 months.

I would love to review this!!! I have been wondering how long it would be until someone looked at how a baby naturally nurses and create a bottle that will work. I had a baby 3 years ago that I NEEDED this bottle to train him with until he got stronger. But I am having a baby in about 3 weeks and I would love to try this bottle!!
