Swing is a single electric pump designed for moms who pump occasionally.

  • 2-Phase Expression® technology is proven to produce more milk in less time.*
  • Convenient battery power option for portable pumping.
What is 2-Phase Expression Technology?
Through research, Medela learned that there are two distinct phases of how babies breastfeed.
  1. Stimulation phase – When babies first go to breast, they suck fast and light to stimulate milk flow.
  2. Expression phase – After milk flow or “let-down” starts, babies breastfeed with a slower, deeper suck, bringing out more milk faster.
With this technology, Medela breastpumps work more like breastfeeding babies.

It was the best buy I did, I could breastfeeding my baby for 1 year thanks to it, because in my country we have only 3 months of maternity leave. My amount of breastmilk don´t decreased and I could continue supply of breastmilk for my precious little baby girl throughout their first year. =) =) =)

I haven't had issues with it backing into the membrane but I found if u loosen the tube into the pump it doesn't back up at all. awesome pump good suction, this is my third breastpump. I tried a hand pump and that wasn't working, bought a myfirst pump from walmart bt that one didn't have enough suction. Bought the swing and I love it. The parts are easy to come by, and if you wash the pump by running water through all of it, then sterilizing it (I have a microwave sterilizer that fits the pump and bottles I use in one session) and it doesn't smell or collect moisture, but I make sure it is dry before I put it away.

Breast feed three and this pump did great for me. I only pumped for times we had to be away from home...like dinners, shopping etc. this pump did its job and never did I once have a problem. It was easy to use and store. Loved that it is small enough to pack if need be..throw it in the diaper bag and go. You will love it!......just saw someone say some parts are not removable ..uh don't know what they are talking about..every part is removable maybe they just don't know how to work their own Swing Pump

I work, and knew I would need to pump efficiently Mon-Fri. So I was on the fence about getting a single pump or paying more for the double pump. I am so glad I went with Swing for many reasons: 1. Double pump means bringing more bottles, and washing more parts every day. I love the simplicity, even though I have to pump each breast separately. 2. Swing fits into several of my purses - I don't have to look like a frumpy bag lady! 3. Been pumping for 6 months now and I have not experienced any issues. In full disclosure - I did have some milk back up into the tubing, but it was because I had the bottle angled incorrectly. 4. Great suction. 10 minutes per breast yields a 6-8 oz bottle every time. I do put it on the max amount though - and you can increase 2 more once it finishes the let down cycle - took me 2 months to figure that out. One tip that I have figured out to make pumping efficient and successful - don't just sit there passively hooked up to the pump - I move the breast shield around while it is on - push it side to side - press on the sides of my breast and squeeze them a little. Really helps drain those ducts!

I use this pump everyday since I'm a working mom and the only issue I have is that my transformer conked out on me. Good thing there's a battery option for me to use until I get a new transformer. I'm on my 7th month of breastfeeding/pumping and my Swing has not let me down. Other than that I have no complaints. For those who have issues because of the valve, this also happens to me so before the milk goes up the tubing (or when you notice that the milk is gathering in the valve), just pull out the tube, let the milk fall into the bottle, then put back the tube. Once you do this the milk will flow normally into the bottle again. Sometimes it's just the pressure inside and the membrane getting stuck on the valve. Not much of an issue for me.

i have no time to write reviews, however, for the benefit of (not-at-home) working mothers and those whobare commited to breastfeeding: The products, all the way around, have been a wonderful use, practicality and quality. I spend 12 hours a day outside of mynhome (unfortunately) and work in a hectic environment, with no personal office: a courthouse. I pump 3-4 times a day, Monday thru Friday, with the Swing pump, and instead of carrying bags, I carry the sterilized bottles themselves (saves steps, risks and money), all in an insulated "handbag" that is actually a discrete lunchbox, with rechargeable batteries (changed once a week) instead the electric plug, and without the icepack ( the building is cold enough). It goes with me almost EVERYWHERE, even on weekends; and many times I have to use it as best and cleanly possible in public restroom "handicap" stalls... Yes! That's how practical and easy it is to use. It has been worth every dollar, which in the end seems like a small price to nourish my son (during the day, since I still breastfeed at night) for almost a year now... The only improvement I'd like to ask for, is that crucial pieces such as the hose(s) be available for purchase. I tried to get one for a double pump that I inherited, and I was not able to. I know that for sanitary reasons sharing is not recommended, but the truth is that these long-lasting pumps are worth passing on responsibly... By the way, I also found good the fact that the disposable Gerber bottles match it perfectly, for example, in case you need to buy emergency items while out (It happened to me a couple of times)... BE ENCOURAGED AND STAY AS CONNECTED AS POSSIBLE TO YOUR BABY WHILE AT WORK...

I had this pump for my now five year old. He was born with a tongue tie and I never successfully got him to nurse. So I pumped. My insurance covered a rental for a couple months and I rented one for another couple (to have the double) but it was harder for me to do both. This pump was used A LOT. I bought another brand initially and it actually caused blisters on my breast. This pump is super quiet compared to others and easily portable. I am planning on buying another one for this baby due in May. We had a house fire last May and sadly, my pump was inside so we had to toss it. However, it is still worth the money to replace i!

I exclusively breastfeed my son for 20 months and owned this pump the entire time. Now I am preparing to use it for our second child. It is perfect for pumping 2-3 times a week. It is not a pump meant for a working mother who needs to pump several times a day, but for an occasional pumping it is perfect!

I'm an exclusive pumper. I wanted the Freestyle, but my insurance would only cover the cost of this pump. I have been pumping every 2 to 3 hours every day for two months now and have had no problems at all with it. For the amount I pump, this pump is pretty amazing and works just fine for me! Sure it's not the Freestyle, but if you can't afford something more expensive, this pump is just fine.

How do you know or find out what insurance covers?

Hello. I originally found these reviews looking to troubleshoot my Swing. Milk was backing up into the tube after a month of daily use and perfect performance. I changed the valve and the tubing and it still happened. I called customer service and they were extremely helpful in troubleshooting with me and providing me replacement parts for the potential problem... at no charge and without a receipt! I did register my pump with Toys R Us though... so that was on record. Even before I received the replacement parts, I thought... "let me change the batteries." AND IT WORKED! Perfect performance again. So, for those of you that are having trouble with the milk backing up in to the tubing, just try and change the batteries. It will effect the amount of pressure with which it pumps and helps to push the milk through the valve with power instead of pooling in the body and backing up into the tube. In my opinion... awesome product and Medela is a fabulous company.

I found this pump to be very convenient. I loved the portability; it was easy to pack for vacation and even to use in the car. I did experience milk backing up into the tubing, but found it easy to wash as explained in the instruction manual. The suction was stronger than on some others pumps, which I appreciated since my son also has a strong suck! My only caution is to believe the advertising: this pump is truly designed for occasional (maybe a few times a week?) pumping. I ended up using it much more often--sometimes multiple times per day--and did eventually wear the pump out. Still, it lasted about sixteen months being used much harder than it was meant to be. I felt it had done its duty. I woud recommend this pump for mommies who feed mostly at the breast but want a nice, efficient pump to use for the occasional bottle or to relieve some engorgment.

I think I have more negative feelings than positive, mainly because I do not have a working cord, but here we go: Negatives: Brand New Breast Pump Cord Did Not Work Runs Through Batteries Like Crazy Not As Powerful As Id Like NOISY Doesn't Completely Empty Breast Positive: Stimulation Phase is effective. (Causes breasts to fill up quickly.) Able to pump around 4-6 ounces each session so its effective. Good storage bottles. Benefit of the doubt: It was one of the top rated pumps and I have nothing to compare it to. So, all I can say, is its OK. Regret: I would get the double electric. If your going to pay this much for the single, mine as well have the double. It will save you lots of time and milk.

I have breastfed two children and the first one did not nurse well so I pumped all the time. I have used hospital grade pumps and medela and ameda. This pump has great suction and is versatile but as others have reported, I too have had issues with the milk backing up into the tubing. I have never experienced this issue with any other pump. I replaced the valve and membranes and that did not resolve the issue. I definitely think the issue is with the pump not replacing the same amount of air it sucks out and it creates a vacuum that keeps the flap on the membrane closed. This is a big issue for me because it takes a while for my milk to let down and it affects my milk flow to constantly have to watch to make sure the pump is not backing up or constantly disrupting the suction because you have to unplug the tube so the milk will fall into the bottle. I am calling medela tomorrow. Obviously they should realize this is a problem if so many customers are having the same issue.

I have been using Freestyle for 3 years for my eldest daughter & this new 2nd one. However I was on business trip yesterday & unfortunately forgot to bring the charger. Borrowed this Medela Swing from a friend thinking how less could it be since this is one of the famous product, after Freestyle. They even created Swing Maxi for double pumping so I thought it must be at least, halfway good. However to my great disappointment, I'm having problem expressing the milk out. And when the milk does flow out, it doesn't flow down to the bottle but backwards into the tubing and pump. It is really frustrating!! I reckon to all mothers, PLEASE SAVE/FORK OUT MORE AND GET A PROPER PUMP (PISA OR FREESTYLE) since this is totally not a good product. If you couldn't pump properly, the milk wouldn't let out properly too and that will resulting in the whole breastfeeding journey

I bought this product because of Madela's good name. The pumping was quite slow from the beginning, and only got slower with time. After following the manual's directions on how to fix this problem, I contacted the Madela customer service department who were quite condescending. Eventually they sent me a new pump and replacement parts, but the problem persisted, which makes me think that the product really just isn't very good. I suspect it would be helpful for occasional use, but I would definitely look elsewhere if daily use of a breast pump is needed. I put the replacement pump in the closet and bought the Madela Pump-in-Style model, which was a great purchase. I wish I had bought it in the first place.

It was great for the first 3 months but suddenly it has very low suction. We purchased a different brand.
Brenda More than 1 year ago
Just like other reviewers, milk would flow into the tube which cannot be clean at all. Medela should fix this big problem for a $100+ pump!!! Nursing moms need some more reliable pump but not this one causing such big problem and wasting time figure how to get the tube clean!!!

This pump has not worked well for me. I only need to pump occasionally. I know that I have a good milk supply, but it takes me four 15 minute pumping sessions to fill one 5 oz. bottle. My milk will flow for about 10 minutes, but then it stops. If I remove the pump for a few seconds and put it back on I can get more milk to flow for a few seconds. I have to keep repeating this over and over, so I stop at 15 minutes because that's all I can handle. I have tried different sizes of shields, but the pump just doesn't seem to have enough suction.

after 3 months, the transformer went out. 4 months...low suction and I have to buy batteries weekly to keep feeding, which is becoming very expensive...I Do have mt receipt... so lets see how this goes!
Flora Wong More than 1 year ago
medela is such a famous brand but swing is just too expensive to be dead by 4m? Even if it's with warranty, it cannot be replaced instantly! & end users do not expect such low suction which to me equates to no suction & asking for a replacement after 4m?
Susie Ramer More than 1 year ago
My spouse went to the store and picked it up for me, I just had a c.secetion, and couldnt go. I liked this pump at first, but then my milk supply slowed, even while I was brestfeeding too. So I pumped more, and the more I worked with it, the more trouble I had. The milk wouldnt fall past the mimbrain, and sometimes would back into the tube. I worked with this thing up, up till my milk supply was no more at 6 mths. I even tried to get my supply back, when I would be showing signs of milk, with the pump, since then my son was on the bottle full time. With no luck, and thinking something was wrong with what I was doing I gave up. Really broke my heart. Formula costs so much more then I wanted to do, thus the reason I was pumping like crazy. I do not like this pump. It cost to much, and couldnt be taken back, lesson learned, and I wont get it again. :/

Just bought this swing model. Having problem expressing the milk out. And when the milk does flow out, it doesn't flow down to the bottle but backwards into the tubing and pump. Lousy product. Spent S$285 for it.
erin More than 1 year ago
I had the same issues as others. The milk sometimes backs into the tube. The box said it was for daily use, and I use it once a day and its broken after such a short time. Medela will replace it, but they want a receipt which I don't know anyone who keeps their receipts that long. I sent in the warranty card with all of the product information. Apparently that means squat. They don't keep the information and they still want a receipt because they said it doesn't prove I purchased the product. So that was pointless, why even have a warranty card then? Either way, too expensive to be such a cheap piece of garbage.

The pump design is not reliable to nurse babies as the milk is in contact with parts that are not removable, washable and sterilized. It is common that the milk goes into the hose and fungus grow as it is not easy to wash and dry. I found out through Internet that many users have the same problem. Other difficulty is that the valve membrane is not easy to wash as well. Do not waste your money.
Amanda Moran More than 1 year ago
Even after reading the first review I still went out and bought this pump for lack of more funds to afford the Freestyle. I also have the same exact problem with my pump. I was told by an LC that she had never heard of this. Even when I unplug the hose from the bottle it still doesn't always let the milk drain out so I sometime have to unscrew the top and pull the membrane down to let the milk out. I am not impressed by this pump and am very angry that I have paid this much for it and can't return it. I won't be trying to replace parts if it won't help in the end. Now I am stuck with a pump that is actually worse than using a manual pump!
