Maria Lennon began her extensive nursing career in North Carolina working in hospital, public health, university education and private practice settings. She has been working with mothers and babies in establishing normal lactation, problem management, and special situations for over 30 years. She is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and has been continuously Board-Certified as a Lactation Consultant since the first exam was given in 1985. She established one of the first in-hospital lactation centers in North Carolina and developed a 5-day Breastfeeding Educator Program for health care professionals.
Maria worked with the North Carolina State WIC Office developing breastfeeding programs, educational materials, and community coalitions to improve breastfeeding services all across the state. In addition, she spent several years coordinating Perinatal Outreach Education for the East Carolina University School of Medicine and has received recognition for her contribution to Nursing Leadership and Service.
Before moving to Arizona and coming to work for Medela in 2000, Maria was Director of a faculty-based Nurse-Midwifery Program associated with New Hanover Hospital and the University of North Carolina Department of OB-GYN. For many years she volunteered her services as a La Leche League Leader, served for two years on the editorial staff of the Journal of Human Lactation and is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, AWHONN and Sigma Theta Tau.
