Maria Sienkiewicz Lennon has had a long career working with mothers and babies in hospital, public health, university education and private practice settings. She received her BSN from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro and MSN from East Carolina University and has been continuously board-certified as a Lactation Consultant since the first board examination was offered in 1985.
Maria was a pioneer in lactation management issues and breastfeeding education. She established one of the first in-hospital lactation centers in North Carolina and developed a 5-day Breastfeeding Educator Program for health care professionals. She also worked with the NC State WIC and Perinatal Outreach Education offices developing educational programs and materials, and helping build community coalitions across the state to increase awareness and improve care for breastfeeding mothers. She received recognition for her contribution to Nursing Leadership and Service in North Carolina.
Maria’s career with Medela moved her to the Southwest US where she worked as a sales consultant and clinical education specialist. Most recently, she has been working with mothers and babies as a certified nurse-midwife on the Navajo Nation in a collaborative full-scope practice and spearheaded the hospital’s efforts to become one of the first Baby Friendly hospitals in Arizona. In addition, she is currently an instructor for a two-day breastfeeding certification program for nurses.
For many years she volunteered her services as a La Leche League and served on the editorial staff of the Journal of Human Lactation. Maria is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, AWHONN, International Lactation Consultant Association and Sigma Theta Tau.
