Dr. Ben Hartmann completed a PhD (plant cell metabolism and physiology) at the University of Western Australia in 2001 and for the following 4 years ran his own business based in New Zealand and Melbourne. During this time he completed a Certificate IV in Small Business Management at RMIT. Since 2005 he has worked at the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) initially establishing and now managing the first donor human milk bank in Australia.
The human milk bank at KEMH has endeavoured to establish best evidence based practices in human milk banking in Australia to support the wider re-establishment of this clinical service. An underlying principle of the service is that donor human milk banking must always support mothers feeding their own babies.
