Description

Diane Spatz, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN

Informal milk sharing has received increased media attention in recent years. This webinar will present the risks and benefits of informal milk sharing including case studies of why families choose informal milk sharing.  Exclusive breastfeeding and exclusive human milk diet afford  many benefits for infants.  An overview of research on exclusive human milk diet for infants will be presented.  Because of the documented health benefits of an exclusive human milk diet, the American Academy of Pediatrics (2012) stated that all preterm infants should receive human milk and that that donor milk should be utilized in the NICU if mother’s own milk is not available or is contraindicated. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has had a formalized donor milk program since 2006.  Development of our program will be detailed as well as cost benefit indications.  Strategies for initiating donor milk usage in your institution will be presented.
