In October 2009, Special Addition will celebrate its 15th Anniversary as a Medela rental station and maternity and nursing boutique in Austin. It’s been an exciting time as we experienced the continued technology growth with Medela. From the Classic to the Lactina to the Pump In Styles to the Symphony to the Freestyle, the road has been an impressive one with each new technology offered. Since the birth of Special Addition in 1994 as a one-employee retail setting, we have continued to grow from our original 1600 sq. ft. store to our current 3300 sq. ft. facility with a staff of eight. The growth of Special Addition has always been guided by the vision of offering caring service and a genuine product to each woman to not only encourage her to begin breastfeeding but to support and encourage her as she continues.
As a former educator, I feel that education is extremely important in assisting each new mom in her decisions on breastpumps, bras, and other accessories to enhance her breastfeeding experience. Having a knowledgeable staff as well as a full range of breastfeeding accessories have been important elements in developing relationships of trust with our customers as well as our growth with Medela. Our three lactation consultants teach our Breastfeeding Basics Classes for singletons and multiples and are available for scheduled consultations, pump flange fittings, and early assessments while five staff members are Certified Breastfeeding Educators and Certified Bra Fitters. Moms can visit with one of the staff in our pump area to learn more about the pump they plan to purchase or rent and to receive advice on accessories from our complete line of Medela breastfeeding products. If baby is ready to feed, moms can slip into our Mothers’ Nursing Room to feed their babies and then continue shopping.
Because we are a one-stop shopping experience for the nursing mother by offering a complete line of Medela breastpumps and products, the expertise of certified bra fitters and product specialists, as well as the services of lactation specialists, our customers have come to brand Special Addition as the “nursing store”! They are always certain to find the most current Medela products, the best fit in bras and clothing, and the most current breastfeeding information in a comfortable and inviting setting.
