Question:

What is the difference between a HCPCS code and a diagnosis code?

Answer:

Health care providers, doctors and LC's provide a specific code to issue a charge based upon their medical diagnosis of a condition. This is also called the ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Code. The diagnosis code tells the insurance company the condition for which the product is necessary. A diagnostic code for Engorgement is 676.2. A HICPIC or HCPC code is different. HCPCS or HICPIC (Health Care Financing Administration Common Procedure Coding System)is a code that is used to describe services rendered for treatment. The pumps have a few different HICPIC codes: E0602 – BREASTPUMP, MANUAL, ANY TYPE E0603 – BREASTPUMP, ELECTRIC (AC AND/OR DC), ANY TYPE (including Symphony) E0604 – BREASTPUMP, HEAVY DUTY, HOSPITAL GRADE, PISTON OPERATED, PULSATILE VACUUM (including Lactina or Classic)
