Baby Scales
What is the accuracy of the BabyChecker Scale?
The accuracy is +/- 0.375% of the reading. The BabyChecker is accurate to 0.01 kilograms for infants under 10kg and to 0.02kg for infants weighing 10-20kg. After moving the scale, use the calibration weight to re-check the accuracy of the scale.
If the weight display does not read 0 when empty or does not correctly measure the weight of the calibration weight, how do I adjust or re-calibrate the BabyChecker?
Using the calibration weight, check the accuracy of the BabyChecker after each move. If the scale needs to be re-calibrated, it must be returned to Medela for service.
Does the BabyChecker include a carrying case?
When rented, the BabyChecker includes a carrying case in the cost of rental. If purchased, the carrying case can be ordered separately.
How is the baby's weight displayed in the BabyChecker Scale?
The baby's weight can be measured in either pounds and ounces or kilograms. Switching between grams and ounces cannot be done during the weighing process as the on/off switch is between the two weight choices.
What does OL mean on the BabyChecker Scale readout?
OL means Over Load and indicates that the load cell has to be replaced. If still under the 1 year warranty, there is no charge for this repair.
What power sources does the BabyChecker use?
The BabyChecker is powered by 6 AA batteries, which powers the unit for approximately 200 hours. This scale does not use a transformer.
What is size and weight of the BabyChecker?
The dimensions of the BabyChecker are 5 ½" H x 12" W x 22" L. The unit itself weighs 6 pounds 6 ounces.
Can a child over 20 pounds be weighed with the basket still on the BabyChecker Scale?
Medela recommends that babies under 20 pounds be weighed by placing them in the basket of the BabyChecker. Generally, infants over 20 pounds would be weighed with the basket removed. The BabyChecker can be used for readings up to 40 pounds.

What is the BabyWeigh scale?
It is a scale that monitors weight gain and calculates breast milk intake. It provides reassurance to parents that their baby is gaining weight and in normal parameters for infants to 24 pounds.
What is the accuracy of the BabyWeigh?
Accuracy is: range 0-6,000g, resolution 2g, and accuracy +/- 0.0034% at 0 to 12 pounds, and range 6,000-12,000g, resolution 5g, and accuracy +/- 0.042% at 12 to 24 pounds.
When an infant is connected to IV lines and other monitoring objects, can this affect the weight?
Lift the cables or tubes away from the baby to prevent added weight allowing them to hang off the scales could cause the weight to vary which is unacceptable when trying to track small increments in weight changes. If using a sheepskin pad, we would suggest either folding the sheepskin or cutting it to size so that it does not hang over the tray. The weight can be zeroed out prior to weighing. As to the baby's movements - the scale is made to adjust for this, that is why the display will fluctuate. It will lock in the weight and beep to tell you when it has received an accurate reading.
How do I adjust the scale display when all dashes are on the display?
You may have to recalibrate the scale. Refer to the Service Manual for calibration instructions. If that does not work then Hold down the Before Nursing Button while turning on the scale, F1 will blink on the display, hit the After Nursing button a couple of times until F4 is on the display then hit the Reweigh button, the program should read H60 0. If the display already reads H60 0 the scale needs to be returned to Medela for repair, the scale most likely has bad load cell. If the display does not read H60 0 you will need to reset the display program. Press the Before Nursing button until the H is displayed, use the Weight Entry button to adjust the display to 6, the After nursing button to change 0, and Reweigh button for blank space 0. Scale program is then reset. If you continue to have problems, call Medela Customer Service to obtain an RMA to return for repair.
If the weight reading is incorrect how do I adjust or recalibrate the BabyWeigh?
Follow recalibration technique using calibration weight found in BabyWeigh instructions. Using the calibration weight, check accuracy after each move. If weight is inaccurate after recalibration, scale should be returned to Medela for repair.
How do you use the BabyWeigh Scale?
Do you have the scale in front of you?
Is the baby’s weight more than 1.102 lbs (500 grams)? Yes
No-if the baby weighs less than 1.102 lbs, you can use this scale, however, it will not lock the weight into memory. Some older scales will only lock in over 2.204 lbs (1000 grams). Are you using the scale with batteries or with the AC Adapter? If Batteries, remove the battery compartment cover from the bottom of the scale housing and correctly place the 6 “C” batteries. When the battery power is low, the display will show LO. If using the AC Adapter, push the small end of the AC Adapter into the receptacle and then plug into the wall outlet.
Is the scale on a flat and level surface? Yes
No - To level the scale; adjust the four legs under the scale until the bubble appears in the center of the Level Gauge. You must dress the baby in the clothes and/or blankets to be worn for breastfeeding. Press the "ON/ZERO" button and wait until a beep is heard and a 0.000 appears in the digital display and it shows CENTER ZERO.
Do you prefer to weigh the baby in pounds or grams?
For grams - Select on the right side of the scale housing the gram measurement.
For pounds - Select on the right side of the scale housing the lb/oz. measurement.
Did you place a cover or blanket on the basket?
Yes - Depress the “ON/ZERO” button again until you hear another beep and see the arrow pointing to “NET.” You will leave the cover or blanket on the scale.
No - proceed to next question. Now place the baby on the basket, holding one hand just above the baby. Wait until the digital display stops fluctuating. When you see the “LOCK” arrow on the digital display, you will hear a beep. This is the baby’s before feeding weight. Press “WEIGHT ENTRY”
Do you see where the arrow is next to “MEMORY WEIGHT?” This means that the baby’s before feeding weight is locked into memory. If you want to keep a log of your baby's weight, you should write the weight down.
Why won't the weight lock in to the scale so that I can then feed and re-weigh?
You will not be able to lock in weight if the baby weighs less than 1.102 lbs (500 grams) or more than 24 lbs (12,000 grams). Many people try to test the unit before using it with a baby, but if they choose an object under 1.102 lbs (500 grams), the weight will not lock in to proceed.
How is the baby's weight displayed?
It's displayed in pounds and ounces or kilograms and can be switched between these during weighing process by sliding the switch on the lower right hand side of the scale.
What power sources does the BabyWeigh operate on?
Six "C" batteries run unit for approximately 1,000 hours or the scale can be powered by an AC adapter.
How long is the BabyWeigh scale warranty?
The warranty on the BabyWeigh Scale is one year.
What is the size and weight of the BabyWeigh?
Dimensions 7 1/2" H x 13" W x 22" L and actual unit weight is 10 pounds.
What is the part number for the BabyWeigh Scale transformer?
The Scale transformer number is #9207021. It also has a Canadian UL listing and labeling.
What is the voltage of the transformer for the BabyWeigh scale?
The Transformer for the BabyWeigh scale is 9 Volts DC.
What is a BabyWeigh calibration weight?
A calibration-quality 22 lb. weight is used with the BabyChecker and BabyWeigh scales to check the accuracy. Required for BabyWeigh or BabyChecker scale Rental Stations.
What is the best way to store scales inside of the carrying cases?
Scales should be stored flat. There is a power cell in each one of the scales that actually determines the weight by measuring the amount of resistance through distance. If the scale is stored sideways, it can change the distance through which it measures. Stacking the scales flat would be alright as long as the basket and power cell is supported, perhaps by inserting cardboard between the cases.
Bra Pads
What are the instructions for washing the 100% Cotton Bra Pads?
Medela washable bra pads can be machine washed warm with like colors. Tumble dry.
What are the disposable bra pads made out of?
Medela disposable bra pads are made of super absorbent materials that prevent leakage and maintain dryness. A soft layer keeps moisture away from the breast for added comfort. Includes a leak-resistant pocket and extra liner that provide added protection. Individually wrapped for hygiene and convenience.
Breast Shells
How do I clean the breastshells?
Before first use every day:
Sanitize once a day. If you used foam inserts, they must be cleaned separately before sanitizing. Squeeze the milk out of the foam, then rinse them twice with clean cold water. Dry them by squeezing between a clean cloth or paper towel. Separate and place the silicone back and dome in a small pan filled with cold water. Distilled water is recommended. Bring the water to a boil and allow it to continue boiling for approximately 10 minutes. Drain off the water and place parts on a clean cloth to dry.
For Quicker Cleaning:
Medela offers Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bags for daily kit disinfection and Quick Clean wipes for cleaning before and after each pumping session. Shells and backs can be put in the top rack of a dishwasher. Do not place foam inserts in a dishwasher.
Between uses during the day:
If you are leaking, special care must be taken to avoid the buildup of dried breastmilk on the shell parts and in the foam inserts. If the foam inserts become saturated, separate the shells, backs and inserts. The shells and backs should be washed with a milk soap or detergent in warm water, rinsed thoroughly in cold water and dried. Squeeze the milk out of the foam, then rinse them twice with clean, cold water. Dry them by squeezing between a clean cloth or paper towel.
How do I use breastshells??
Only wear breastshells during waking hours. The reason that you would only wear them during the day is so that you do not have to worry about lying on them or having them shift. If they shift they could apply pressure to the wrong area. If you are awake, you will know if they have moved out of place or if the pressure is too much and be able to adjust them.
If using the SoftShells, do not feed the milk collected in the foam insert to the baby. Discard this milk.
For inverted nipples, begin wearing the breast shells during the last couple of weeks of pregnancy (contact your healthcare provider before pre-natal use). Continue to wear them after the baby is born between feedings, until your baby latches on to the breast without difficulty.
For sore nipples, breast shells can be worn continuously between breastfeeding sessions.
What material are the breastshells made out of?
TheraShell backings are made of soft, flexible silicone backs and include both backings for sore and inverted nipples. The domes are made of polypropylene. BPA Free.
SoftShells are sold with only one type of backing, either sore or inverted. The SoftShell backings are also made of soft, flexible silicone backs, but have a more flattering contour under your clothing. BPA Free.
Breastmilk
Why does my milk smell soured or soapy?
Rarely, some mothers notice their defrosted breastmilk has a soapy taste or odor. This is due to lipase, an enzyme, which helps to digest the fat content of the breastmilk. If this occurs, scald the breastmilk (do not bring to a boil) on a stove until tiny bubbles appear along the sides of the pan; do this before freezing. The scalding process will neutralize the enzyme, preventing the soapy taste or smell.
Can I transport my breastmilk on an airplane?
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows mothers flying with, and without, their child to bring breastmilk in quantities greater than 3 ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint. Please check the TSA website for the most up-to-date information regarding restrictions.
How do I defrost my breastmilk?
Thaw milk overnight in the refrigerator, or hold the bottle under warm running water until thawed. You can also place the sealed container in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes to bring it to body temperature. Do not let the water reach the level of the container cap.
Thawed milk is safe in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
CAUTION: Never microwave breastmilk. Microwaving can cause severe burns to baby’s mouth from hot spots that develop in the milk during microwaving. Microwaving can also change the composition of breastmilk.
How long can breastmilk be kept in a cooler carrier?
- You can safely store your breastmilk for up to 12 hours* with Pump In Style Advanced and Freestyle breastpump cooler bags. *When Ice pack is frozen solid.
- Direct exposure to the sun, like leaving the cooler in a car, severely reduces the cooling effectiveness.
- Breastmilk is safe stored in a cooler at/or below 59 degrees for up to 24 hours.
- The liquid inside the cooling elements is water with food grade dye. The liquid is non-toxic.
- Medela does not have recommendations for storing breastmilk with dry ice. Consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for further information.
How much milk should I produce?
In the past it was thought that mothers needed to make more and more milk as their babies grew. Scientists now know that a healthy milk supply remains fairly constant over the six (6) months of exclusive breastfeeding. Your baby will take the amount he needs.
During the early weeks, babies eat very frequently and grow very quickly. By day 10-14, babies should regain any weight they lost after birth. For the next few months babies will gain about an ½ ounce to 1 ounce a day.
Around three (3) to four (4) months, a breastfed baby’s rate of grown begins to slow down. Your milk supply will continue to satisfy the baby until it is time to introduce solids at 6 months.
Be the end of the first week of life, women who are breastfeeding one baby normally make between 19 to 30 ounces of milk each day. Infants between one (1) and six (6) months of age normally drink an average of 19 to 30 ounces a day.
An average size “meal” for a baby is between three (3) to five (5) ounces of breastmilk. Formula is harder to digest and less well absorbed. Formula fed babies may need larger feeds. Consult your healthcare professional for advice.
How do I store my breastmilk?
- It is normal for pumped milk to vary in color and consistency depending on your diet. Stored milk will separate into layers and the cream will rise to the top. Gently swirl (don’t shake) the bottle to mix the milk layers.
- Avoid adding freshly pumped milk to already cooled milk. You can add small amounts of cooled breastmilk to the same refrigerated container throughout the day.
- Pumped milk may be added to frozen milk provided it is first chilled and the quantity is less than what is frozen.
- Store your milk in Medela’s BPA-free breastmilk collection bottles or in storage bags specifically designed for breastmilk, such as Medela’s BPA-free Pump & Save™ bags.
- Freeze milk in two (2) to four (4) ounce portions. Small amounts thaw more quickly. You will waste less milk this way. Be sure to leave some extra room at the top of the container so the bottle or bag will not overflow when freezing or thawing.
- Seal containers tightly. Write the date on a piece of tape and place on the bag or bottle. Use the oldest milk first.
- If you do not plan to use the milk within a few days, freeze it right away in the coldest section of your freezer.
Breastmilk Bottles
What are the ages for the slow and medium flow nipples?
Each silicone nipple is stamped with an “S” for Slow-flow or an “M” for Medium-flow. Our silicone, Slow-flow nipples can be used at any age, however, always inspect the nipple immediately before and after each use. If nipples appear cracked or torn discontinue use immediately. Infants must not be bottle fed without adult supervision. Do not attempt to enlarge the nipple hole. Nipples should not be used as pacifiers. Make sure breastfeeding is well established before introducing a nipple.

Medela breastmilk bottles are made of FDA food contact grade polypropylene. Medela bottles are BPA-Free and designed for safe feeding and long-term storage of breastmilk.
Polypropylene has a recycle number of 5 or PP stamped into the plastic item. Medela only uses new, virgin materials in manufacturing of all products.
Why is Calma available in only 1 size?
Multiple nipple sizes are not required as the baby controls the flow of milk through vacuum. The baby will apply more or less vacuum to Calma as its need for milk changes throughout breastfeeding duration.
Does Calma require any special cleaning?
Medela standard cleaning instructions apply to Calma. Boil in water for 10 minutes prior to first use. After, Calma can be cleaned in the dishwasher or Micro Steam bag daily. Care should be taken not to use a stiff brush on the Air Control System or Milk Flow control system as these parts could be damaged by over aggressive cleaning.
Is Calma compatible with all Medela bottles/containers?
Calma is compatible with all Medela containers, including the Colostrum containers, 80 ml, 5 oz and 8 oz bottles.
Can Calma only be used with breastmilk?
Calma has been designed to be exclusively used with breastmilk and as such we cannot attest to Calma being used with other food.
Can Calma be used with other manufacturer's bottles on the market?
Calma has been designed to be used with Medela's bottles and containers. We have not done testing on other manufacturer's containers. You may find that you can thread Calma onto other bottles but you may find that this combination may leak or cause other issues. We do not recommend using Calma with any other manufacturer containers.
Breastshields
What are the breastshields made of?
The PersonalFit breastshields are made of Polypropylene.
What causes breastshields to discolor?
Discoloration is most likely caused by trace chemicals in the water. Iron is a common trace element that can build up over many boiling cycles to look yellow or brownish. Calcium and Magnesium are also common elements in our water here in the U.S. that can discolor parts. Thus, the product is not defective or unsafe to use. Micro-steam bags will reduce the discoloration.
How do I choose the correct size breastshield?
Click here for more information about choosing the right size breastshield.
How do I clean the PersonalFit breastshields?

Quick Clean™
Follow the instructions on Medela's Quick Clean Micro-Steam bag or Quick Clean wipes.
What are the Micro-Steam bags made out of?
Micro-Steam bags are made out of polyester, nylon, and polyethylene teraphthalate (PET).
Can more than one Micro-Steam bag be put in the microwave at once?
More than one bag can be put in a larger microwave. No additional time on the microwave is required. Make sure the bags fit and rotate properly.
Can Micro-Steam bags be used in microwaves that have a higher wattage than 1100 watts?
Micro-Steam bags can be used with different types of microwaves. If the wattage is higher than 1100 watts, set the time for 1.5 minutes.
How should tubing be placed in the Micro-Steam bags to prevent melting?
The tubing should be coiled and placed horizontally (flat) in the bottom of the Micro-Steam bag, not upright or vertically. It is safe to put two tubes in the Micro-Steam bags. It is important to make sure enough water (4 ounces) is added and that the microwave is set for the correct amount of time. You should have a turn-table in the microwave and make sure that the bag does not tip over. If so, this may cause both pieces of tubing to melt.
Micro-Steam bags are NOT okay for use with…
…SoftFit breastshields, breastpump piston/cylinder assembly, rubber, polycarbonate plastics, SNS parts, or foam inserts.
Micro-Steam bags are okay for use with…
...breastmilk bottles, nipples, pacifiers, cups, and breastpump accessories. Use only with microwave-safe plastics.
NOTE: Tubing must not be steam-cleaned with any other items, and requires 4 ounces of water. Steam-cleaning tubing may result in clouding or discoloration which will not affect its performance.
When can I use the wipes?
Quick Clean Wipes are intended for use after pumping. If used immediately before pumping, rinse with water after wiping or allow 10 minutes to air dry.
Quick Clean Wipes are proven safe for cleaning breastpumps, breastshields, and accessories. Also great for changing tables, high chairs, cribs, countertops, toys and more. Unscented, alcohol and bleach free.
How many times can a single Micro-Steam bag be used?
Each bag can be used up to 20 times (no more because they can break down and leak).
Double Electric - Freestyle
How do I sanitize the breastpump kit?
If sanitizing your kit, separate all parts that come in contact with your breast or breastmilk and boil for 10 minutes. (Boiling may cause tubing to become foggy or cloudy. This does not affect the function of the tubing.)
All parts that come in contact with your breast or breastmilk are dishwasher save as long as they are secure on the top rack away from the heating element.
You can also follow the instructions on Medela's Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag.
How do I choose the right size breastshield?
Click here for more information about choosing the right size breastshield.
What do I do if there is low or no suction when pumping with the Freestyle breastpump?
- Make sure the breastshield is assembled correctly and the back cap is firmly attached at all three connection points.
- Make sure the breastshield forms a complete seal around the breast.
- Make sure the tubing ends are securely attached into the pump and breastshield assemblies. There should be a slight click when the tubing connection is properly made.
- Take care not to kink the tubing.
- If single pumping, make sure the unused tube is securely connected to the tubing dock.
- Make sure battery is not low (flashing battery symbol with one bar). If low, use power cord to charge.
What does the "display error" message mean?
- “Err” accompanied by 3 beeps (pump may or may not work). This indicates a problem with the pump’s hardware. Please emal Medela Customer Service or call 800-435-8316.

- Power cord symbol flashing and pump does not turn on: This indicates a problem with the voltage and/or power supply. First, make sure to use the appropriate Medela power cord that came with the pump. If this does not solve the problem, email Medela Customer Service or call 800-435-8316.

- Battery symbol (outline and one bar) flashing: This indicates low battery power. Connect the pump to the power cord and plug in to charge the battery. Note: A fully charged battery, if removed from pump, will cause the battery symbol to flash when re-inserted. Recharge for 24 hours to reset flashing battery symbol.

- Battery symbol (outline only) flashing and pump does not turn on:

- This indicates a problem with the battery.
- First, connect the pump to the power cord and plug in until battery is fully charged

- If this does not work, disconnect the power cord and remove the battery for at least 10 seconds. Reinsert the battery, connect the power cord, and plug in for a full charging cycle (this may take up to 24 hours).
- If this does not work, replace with a new battery (email Medela Customer Service or call 800-435-8316).
- Battery message “bAtt” is displayed: This indicates the pump is in initial charging mode or the initial charge mode has been interrupted (battery was removed and reinserted). The pump will need to go through a complete charging cycle (18-24 hours) prior to use. For best results allow the pump to charge plugged in and uninterrupted for 24 hours. There is no need to remove the battery unless replacing.

I am having problems with the battery, what do I do?
- Make sure the battery has been inserted into the pump. When first opening the Freestyle packaging, the battery is inside the top portion of the plastic tray that contains the pump.
- Battery may not be properly inserted into the pump. Make sure the “This side down” message is inserted toward the bottom of the pump and that the pull tab is facing up. When properly inserted the battery should easily slide into the battery compartment.
- Make sure pump is plugged into a wall outlet and the power cord symbol is displayed when charging
- Make sure you are using the power cord that came with the pump. If the power cord symbol is flashing, this indicates a problem with the voltage and/or power supply.
What is the residue on my breastpump kit?
The film is water deposits left on the plastic of your kit. It will not harm the baby or your milk nor will it affect the function of the kit or pump.
Does altitude affect the suction level of my pump?
The higher the altitude, the more chance the suction level will decrease.
Does the Freestyle lithium battery have to be removed if I am traveling by plane?
According to the TSA, if the lithium battery is in the Freestyle pump it does not have to be removed from the pump. For personal use items such as hearing aids or breastpumps there is generally no restriction.
Traveling outside of the U.S.: When traveling outside of the U.S., you have three options:
- Use the power cord that came with Freestyle in conjunction with the proper travel adapter for the relevant country (available at many electronic or travel stores)
- Use battery power
- Use Medela 12V Vehicle Lighter Adapter (#67153) sold separately
What materials are the kits and bottles made out of?
Medela breastmilk bottles and all our products that come in contact with breastmilk are and always have been 100 percent BPA-Free. Medela breastmilk bottles, storage containers, feeding products and breast pump kits are made with polypropylene. All existing research maintains that polypropylene is safe.

Nursing Bras
How do I size for a bra?
To determine your size:
Band Size: Measure under the arms making sure the tape measure does not slip down the back. If the number is uneven, round up.
Bust size: While wearing a good-fitting, unpadded bra, measure around the fullest part of the bust to determine Bust Size. Make sure the tape measure fits evenly around the body, not slipping down the back.
Subtract the Band Size from the Bust Size to determine the Cup Size. A difference of up to 1" is cup size A, up to 2" is B, up to 3" is C, up to 4" is D, up to 5" is DD, up to 6" is F, up to 7" is G, and up to 8" is H.
To see exactly how measuring is done, watch our Bra Fitting Video.

The Bilibed is for treatment of newborn jaundice (hyperbilirubinema). It provides more intensive Phototherapy than traditional lights or fiberoptic units and is proven to reduce bilirubin levels. It allows for "rooming-in" with the mother, it works in standard bassinets and cribs. There is no need for eye patches because light contacts only the baby’s body. There are no overhead warming lights to position or move. Avoids chafing associated with fiberoptic panels.
What is the minimum and maximum baby weight capacity when using the Bilibed?
The ideal weight is ~5.5 lbs(~>2.5 kgs). Caution should be exercised for babies below ~3.3 - 4.4 lbs (1.5 - 2.0 kgs) as their skin surface may be too small. The maximum baby weight is ~22lbs (10kgs).
What is the material of the BabySupport?
BabySupport cover is polyurethane plastic.
How long does the Bilibed bulb last?
It has 1,500 hour bulb life, with a warning light for bulb replacement.
Does my baby need eye patches with the Bilibed?
There is no need for eye patches, the light contacts only the baby’s body. The Bilicombi properly positions the baby to the bed.
Is the Bilibed cleared by the FDA?
Yes, the BiliBed is an FDA approved class II medical product.
a) What is the difference between the Medela blue fluorescent tube #9360015 and any old generic blue fluorescent tube? b) What makes the Medela blue tube reach the light intensity? c) What makes this fluorescent blue bulb different?
a) We recommend using our replacement tubes over the period of the warranty and thereafter you can purchase any comparable tube. As with any bulb, the intensity can decrease. You can purchase a Bili-meter to check the light output. b) The baby is placed closer to the light source adding to the intensity of light. The mirrors in the base of the Bilibed add to the intensity by reflecting up. c)Our tube is good for 1,500 hours.
Do I get any Bilicombis when I purchase a Bilibed?
When purchasing, each bed comes with 10 disposable bilicombis # 8000336 at no charge.
Does there need to be a Registered Nurse at a Rental Station in order for the site to rent Bilibeds?
Yes, if a rental station would like to carry Bilibed's at their location, there must be a Registered Nurse on site.
Why are there two hour meters on the Bilibed?
When the tube lights up, both meters will start counting. This is indicated by the blinking hourglasses. The hour meter (Total H) measures the total time the bed has been in use and cannot be reset. The hour meter (H) shows the therapy time and can be reset. For resetting to 0, press the start/stop switch and hold down for 15 seconds.
What is the Bilibed's light output (irradiance level)?
Irradiance is 40-60 uw/cm2/nm from a compact fluorescent tube blue light. This translates as 40-60 microwatts/centimeters squared/nanometers from a compact fluorescent blue light tube.
Does the Bilibed light bulb tube contain mercury?
Yes, as all fluorescent lamps must contain a low level of mercury in order to ignite the gases within. As with any fluorescent light tubes within your building, the BiliBed light tubes should be disposed of according to your state's refuse disposal law.

Can I order the Bilibed base unit?
The Bilibed base unit cannot be ordered since it requires a UL sticker and serial number. You must return the Bilibed to us for repair.
Why is the Bilibed not recommended for pre-term or premature babies?
Pre-term or premature infants typically require an incubator and the Bilibed should not be used in an incubator.
How does a rental station get training on the Bilibeds?
They must request an inservice from their Sales rep and have a RN degree.
Where is the serial number found on the BiliBed?
The serial number is found on one of the back legs of the BiliBed.

Can the Bilibed be used in an Incubator?
No, the bilibed is not for use in Incubators. The temperature control of the incubator may not be capable of compensating for the impact of the Bilibed. Increased humidity inside the incubator being applied for the treatment of the baby, may have a negative impact on the electric/electronic system of the Bilibed or even create an electrical shock hazard. If oxygen or other gases are used for the treatment of the baby inside the incubator, this may create a fire/explosion hazard.
What is the warranty on the Bilibed?
There is a two year limited warranty.
How much does the Bilibed actually weigh?
Weighs 11 pounds

Do I need to clean the Piston/Cylinder assembly?
For effective operation of your Lactina pump, take care of your piston and cylinder after every few pumping sessions. Wash the cylinder, rubber seal, and vacuum regulator ring with warm soapy water. Rotate the piston in the cylinder.
Why does the rubber seal have an odor?
These parts are made of Nitril Rubber and in the manufacturing process these parts get chlorinated. Although the parts get thoroughly rinsed after the chlorination process, there may remain an odor.

When operating the Lactina Select with the vehicle lighter adapter, the speed cannot be adjusted.
My Lactina has no power -- how do I replace the fuse?
The Lactina pumps have a power fuse on the bottom of the pump. The black cap can be removed with a coin and the fuse can be replaced with a 1.25 amp fuse.
Does altitude affect the suction level?
The higher the altitude, the more chance the suction level will decrease.
Why is the Lactina manufactured with a 2-prong cord instead of a 3-prong cord?
The reason it only needs a 2 prong cord is that the Lactina is "double insulated" and therefore the 3rd prong (protective earth) is not required. Double insulated means that you have either 2 layers of insulation or one especially thick insulation layer. As the entire housing of the Lactina is made of plastic and there are no metal parts that could come into contact with high voltage, there is no danger for the user even if the inside of the pump breaks down.
Can I get replacement clips for the Lactina Carrying Case?
Medela generally sends these out at no charge. The clips that seal the carrying case can break and can be replaced easily. Slide out the old and slide in the replacement.

Rental - Symphony
What functions do the knobs perform on the Symphony?
The button all the way to the left is the on/off button. The knob in the center of the unit controls the suction and speed. The button all the way to the right is the "let down" button. This button interrupts the first phase (stimulation phase) so you can go right to the expression phase without waiting for the 2 minute stimulation phase to end.
Why does the cover pop off the Symphony pump while I'm pumping?
If the Symphony cover pops up while you are pumping, it may be due to an obstruction in the tubing. Try blowing into the tubing and make sure that there are no kinks in the tubing.
What are the phases of the Symphony pump?
The Symphony has two phases. The Stimulation phase initiates a faster milk ejection reflex. The pump cycles at 120 cpm and the vacuum can range 50-200 mmHg. The second phase, the Expression Phase, supports milk production and flow with the Comfort Flow Zone for maximum comfort and efficiency. The pump has varying cycles ranging in vacuum of 50-250 mmHg in the Expression phase.
Can the protective membrane be boiled?
Yes, the Symphony Protective Membrane can be boiled without harm.
What should I do if my milk is already flowing when I start pumping?
Use the individual setting and press the "let-down" button to directly use the expression mode.
How long will the Symphony operate before it automatically shuts off?
The Symphony automatically shuts off after 30 minutes with both battery and electric operation. This feature was added because the pump is so quiet that it could easily be turned on and left on without realizing it.
What does it mean when the Symphony reads, "invalid card?"
When the Symphony message reads, "invalid card" it could mean that the card in the pump is not the correct program card; the card could be damaged or the card is not inserted correctly.
Unplug the pump and remove the card. Check the card to make sure it is the correct card and also check for damage. Replace if necessary. Make sure the card is inserted in the direction of the arrows and the arrows are visible.
Plug in the pump and press the let-down button and the power button at the same time. Hold for several seconds and release. Try the pump again. If this does not correct the problem, the pump would need to be sent back the rental station for return to Medela.

What do I do if there is low or no suction when pumping with the Swing breastpump?
- Make sure all connections of the kit and pump are secure.
- Make sure the breastshield forms a complete seal around the breast.
- Make sure the white membrane is laying flat against the yellow valve. Check that the yellow valve is clean and not damaged.
- Make sure the tubing end fits securely into the pump body & motor.
- Take care not to kink tubing. If milk is getting into tubing, check that the tubing is not kinked or pinched.
- Perform rinsing procedure.
What do I do if milk accidentally gets into the Swing motor?
Turn off the pump and unplug from the power source. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor and proceed as follows:
- Remove battery compartment cover from bottom of motor.
- Remove small, black foam piece from bottom of pump.
- Rinse the foam piece with clear lukewarm water, and squeeze out excess water. Allow to dry thoroughly before inserting back into pump.
- Pour about 2 ounces of warm soapy water into a container.
- Connect the tubing to the motor, leaving the other end unconnected.
- Connect the power cord to the motor, then plug into electrical outlet (do not power with battery).
- Hold the end of the tubing that is not connected to the pump in the container with the soapy water.
- Place the motor over a dry sink and switch on. The water will pump through the tubing into the motor and flow out through the opening beneath the battery cover. Allow it to pump until all the water has been flushed through.
- Repeat this procedure again with 2 ounces of warm clear water.
- Leave the motor switched on for an additional 3 minutes so it dries completely.
- As soon as the foam piece is dry, put it in place again, and re-install the battery compartment cover.
- If necessary, clean the pump kit according to cleaning instructions.
Why won't my Swing pump turn on?
- Make sure pump is plugged in correctly. Pump will NOT turn on if tubing is plugged into the AC adapter port.
- Make sure the “on” button is being held between 1 and 3 seconds.
- Do not repeatedly hit the on/off button, or hold the on/off button down longer than 3 seconds.
- If using batteries, make sure transformer is not plugged into pump.
- If using batteries, make sure batteries are installed correctly inside pump.
What is the residue on my breastpump kit?
The film is water deposits left on the plastic of your kit. It will not harm the baby or your milk nor will it affect the function of the kit or pump.
Does altitude affect the suction level?
The higher the altitude, the more chance the suction level will decrease.
What materials are the kits and bottles made out of?
Medela breastmilk bottles and all our products that come in contact with breastmilk are and always have been 100 percent BPA-Free. Specialty Feeding
What is the SNS tubing made of?
The SNS tubing is made of Silicone.
Does the SNS include an air vent?
Yes, the vent is needed to allow air into the bottle when fluid is removed.
How do I unclog the SNS?
Make sure the breast milk or supplement is properly mixed; both need to be shaken or stirred until solids dissolve into the liquid for the feed to flow through the tubing. If the tubing appears to be crimped, roll the length of the tubing between your thumb and forefinger slowly to free up the tubing. Reposition the baby if there is still no flow.
When do you use an SNS?
The SNS was developed to allow the baby that is not getting enough nourishment at the breast to receive extra feed or supplements while remaining at the breast. Adoptive mothers often use the product to help re-lactate or for the bonding experience the system can provide between mother and baby. The SNS should be used on the recommendation of a lactation consultant or physician.
How do I adjust the flow rate of the SNS?
The easiest way to change the flow is using the different sizes of tubing. The small tubing has a red valve, the medium has a white valve, and the large has a clear valve. The flow can also be adjusted by the height the system is worn. When the bottom of the SNS container is above the level of the nipple, the feed will flow more quickly. When the SNS is placed below the level of the nipple, the feed will flow slowly. The flow can be increased by gently squeezing the SNS container while the baby is feeding. Warming the feed can increase the flow.
How do I prevent leaking in the SNS?
Make sure that the attachment ring is screwed on properly. Check the valve which holds the tubing and re-position it. If it is warped, this may cause leakage. Also, check the valve holder for damage. Lastly, make sure the tubing has no holes or damage. Forcing the feed through the system may cause some leakage at the attachment ring and valve with tubing.
What is the proper positioning for the SNS?
The tubing should extend about a ¼" beyond the nipple. The tube should be in the center of the upper lip of the baby and not off to the sides. Reposition the baby if there is no flow. Reposition the tubing if there is no flow. Make sure the tubing is not crimped.
How do I start the flow of the SNS?
The system can be primed by squeezing feed from the container into the tubing. Release only one side of the tubing at a time from the attachment ring when feeding the baby. Gently tickle the babies lip with the nipple and tube.
How do I clean the SNS tubing?
Sterilization is not an effective method of cleaning the SNS's tubing. To clean the tubing, fill the SNS with warm, soapy water and reconnect the ring and tubing. Then, force the soapy water through the system. Refill the SNS with clean water and flush the system with it. Repeat the clean rinsing as necessary. All other parts can be sanitized.
What are the different sizes and colors of the SNS tubing?
The large tubing is 0.85mm in diameter and has a clear top.
The medium tubing is 0.75mm in diameter and has a white top.
The small tubing is 0.65mm in diameter and has a red top.
What can be fed through the SNS?
Breastmilk is the preferred nutrition for babies. Clinicians may recommend other fluids, fortifiers and/or medications to meet the baby's medical and nutritional needs.
Can the SNS tubing be cleaned in the Micro-Steam bags?
The tubings from the SNS should not be cleaned in the Micro-Steam bags. It is recommended to clean tubes by flushing with hot, soapy water and rinse.
Storage Bags
