12 Totally Attainable Mini Resolutions

Life kind of turns upside down when you’re a new mom. Yes, in a good way, but let’s face it, your life now is probably completely different from your pre-baby life.

So, while you’re adjusting to this new life, it’s important to give yourself a little break. You don’t need to know everything about parenting (who does?), you don’t need to be totally put together all the time (living on dry shampoo and black leggings is ok), and you certainly don’t need six-pack abs (but do you ever?).

Still, it’s the new year, and in the spirit of fresh starts and new habits, it’s never a bad idea to set a small resolution for yourself. This isn’t the year for aggressive fitness goals or crazy diet detoxes or even lofty reading goals. This is the year for attainable resolutions – things you can aspire to do, and then actually do. Choose one from our list, or make up your own, just make sure it’s realistic.

  1. Make your bed.

    We know, we know. This sounds like something your mom would say to you when you were a teenager. But making your bed is a small way to start your day off with a feeling of accomplishment.

  2. Stop negative self-talk.

    Yes, this is easier said than done. But try to recognize when you’re being too hard on yourself, and redirect your thoughts to ones that are positive, gentle, and empowering.

  3. Do your makeup, blow out your hair, or shave your legs.

    We’re not telling you to do these things for appearance’s sake. This goal is more about proving to yourself that you can find the time to do something nice for yourself. Bonus – simple grooming habits can make you feel good and ready to take on the day.

  4. Drink more water.

    This is so, so important, especially for busy moms. Staying hydrated helps fight feelings of fatigue, constipation, and can help improve your overall health so you’re feeling your best to handle whatever life throws at you.

  5. Stop comparing yourself.

    When you’re home alone with your baby and totally new to motherhood, it can be easy to scroll through Instagram or Facebook and compare yourself to other moms. Remember that every mom is different, every baby is different, and every breastfeeding journey is different. Comparing yourself to someone else is never, ever worth it.

  6. Do something new.

    Sometimes it can feel like your new mom identity is your only identity. But don’t forget to do something that’s just for you. Something non-parenting related, like watching a new show, picking up a new hobby, or cooking something you’ve never tried before. These new experiences can break up the sometimes-monotonous life of new motherhood and make you feel more like you.

  7. Go for a walk.

    Do some living-room yoga. Do squats while you’re holding baby. Your health is important, so make sure you’re taking care of it. You don’t have to run out and sign up for a boot camp or spin class (unless you want to!), just make sure you find a way to work some simple exercises into your week.

  8. Sleep.

    This is another one of those goals that’s easier said than done for many new moms. But a well-rested mama is better for everyone. Our favorite hack for sneaking in a few Z’s is to sleep when your little one is sleeping, NO exceptions. Put down the electronics (SERIOUSLY), leave the dishes and laundry, lie down, and close your eyes.

  9. Ask for help.

    We’re so used to living in this culture of super-hero moms who can do everything. But raising a baby is hard work. And like all hard work, no one should be expected to do it without a little help along the way. Ask your partner, your parents, older children, your best friend, or whoever you can find to lend a hand.

  10. Learn to laugh.

    Laughing is therapeutic. Whether you’re cleaning up a diaper blow-out for the second time today or leaking milk through your last clean shirt, learning to take it in stride and laugh about it is so important. Because honestly, if you don’t laugh, you’re probably going to cry.

  11. Eat something healthy every day.

    Again, this is not necessarily the time to kick-start a new diet. But while you’re breastfeeding (and, well, all the time), it’s a good idea to eat healthy and balanced. Sneak some greens into your morning smoothie, keep all your favorite salad ingredients stocked in the refrigerator, and cure your craving for something crunchy with almonds instead of chips.

  12. Enjoy little moments.

    Sure, it’s cliché, but this time will fly by. Take a moment to pause and enjoy these early days. Breathe in that new baby smell a little deeper, close your eyes and listen to the sweet little suckling of your baby at your breast, and relish in the pride your feel when your baby reaches the tiniest of milestones.
