Medela's Commitment to Breastfeeding & Breastmilk
Medela supports the WHO Code’s call for commitment to breastfeeding and breastmilk as the optimal nutrition for the growth, development and health of babies. With an extensive portfolio of breastpumps, Medela also offers breastmilk feeding products that help moms provide expressed breastmilk back to their babies. While the WHO Code prohibits the marketing of feeding bottles and teats to mothers, Medela is acting on our responsibility to increase, rather than limit information supplied directly to mothers that helps them make informed decisions on products that can increase their breastfeeding duration. Medela’s breastmilk bottles come in a variety of sizes and are made with BPA-free plastic. In line with the AAP Guidelines on introducing bottle feeding, Medela is pleased to offer a system for feeding breastmilk once breastfeeding is well established. The combination of our breastpumps, specialty feeding devices, conventional feeding systems, and breastfeeding accessories helps Medela realize our obligation and commitment to mothers by offering products to support their complete breastfeeding experience.
 

Medela Company History
Founded in 1961 in Zug, Switzerland by Olle Larsson, Medela continues to grow under the ownership of the Larsson family today. Medela serves its customers through 15 subsidiaries distributing to over 90 countries worldwide. Medela’s U.S. subsidiary, Medela, Inc., has been serving the American market for nearly 30 years.

 

Medela’s commitment to quality products and supportive programs has made the company the industry leader and the primary supplier of breastpumps to healthcare facilities in the United States.

Medela is the first manufacturer in the United States to develop a workplace program to meet the needs of working mothers. Through the Corporate Lactation Program, businesses support breastfeeding employees and their families by providing breastfeeding counseling and breastpumps in an accessible, private, pleasant location. This program has been instrumental in making American businesses more "nursing-mother-friendly" with programs in major corporate firms.

Commitment to Protecting the Environment 
 
 
While Medela, Inc. promotes breastfeeding as the most natural and ecologically-friendly way to support the environment - in addition to enhancing mother and baby health - Medela is also committed to protecting the environment and reducing solid waste.
 
A fundamental part of Medela's commitment to the environment includes participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) innovative WasteWise program, the country's first national voluntary solid waste reduction program. WasteWise encourages organizations to reduce municipal solid waste through waste prevention, recycling and buying or manufacturing recycled products. WasteWise partners have saved thousands, even millions, of dollars in purchasing costs and waste disposal fees by reducing, reusing and recycling solid waste materials.
 
As a WasteWise member since 2009, Medela has established new waste prevention activities and expanded and improved its current recycling efforts. The programs initiated as part of participation in WasteWise will build on the successes of Medela's established waste prevention and recycling efforts.
 
 
Commitment to Advocacy
As a Business Council Member, Medela is proud to collaborate with the National WIC Association and its membership to ensure the continuing success of the WIC program.
 
The National WIC Association (NWA) is the non-profit education arm and advocacy voice of the Special Supplement Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), the over 9 million mothers and young children served by WIC and the 12,000 service provider agencies who are the front lines of WIC's public health nutrition services for the nation's nutritionally at-risk mothers and young children. NWA is the proactive voice supporting, inspiring and empowering the WIC community through creativity, teamwork and leadership to serve America's low-income, high-risk women, infants and children.
